Play Schedule
Friday. Aug. 18, "The Com
edy of Errors."
Saturduy, Aug. 17, "As You
Like It."
All plays begin at 8:30
o'clock in the Ashland Civic
F.limhetrian theater.
Miss Holland Is
Valley Visitor
Miss Norma Holland of Che-
halis, Wash.r is a visitor at the
home of her mother. Mrs. Daisy
Holland in Central Point and
her sister. Miss Edna Shaver and
other members of her family.
She plans to spend a fortnight
here.
it was, both literally and physi
cally, before a packed house at
Ashland's civic Elizabethan the
atre to see the final performance
of "Much Ado About Nothing",
given on schedule less than 24
hours after fire had swept
through the storage and costum
ing departments backstage and
destroyed more than 65 per cent
of all costumes.
True to the unwritten law of
the theatre, the "show did go
on" and drew round after round
of applause and unreserved en
thusiasm for the plucky young
sters, who, faced with the gigan
tic task of re-building costumes
for three entire shows, perform
ed the Job without a hitch.
Last night's showing was
somewhat changed from the orig
inal presentation late last week.
Tuxedos replaced the Elizabeth
an attire for several of the char
acters, uniforms of Ashland's
National Guard company did
the rest. Some of the feminine
garb was salvaged from the
smoke and water and re-faced
and re-glittered.
Cliiiens Aid
Ashland i civic minded citi
zens responded to an appeal for
help with all the equipment at
hand, old clothes, hats, shoes
and out-moded finery, and in
record time from the battery of
sewing machines humming on
the lawn behind the theatre yes
terday, came ample attire.
Wtih exception of tuxedos and
modern military uniforms, last
night i audience found little ma
terial difference between the
last and first showings of "Much
Ado." If anything, the tempo of
the production was enhanced by
the added efforts of the cast.
The comedy situations brought
more laughter; dramatic se
quences were keyed to a higher
pitch and the invisible soark
which fired the cast to new
heights was caught by the audience.
' Jimmie Baughman, In an old
Civil war uniform, was a new
and more lovable Dogberry; the
villians, Delmar Solcm, Don
Shanahan and Doug Hubbard.
were more dastardly; Jerry
vawter, clad in a bright blue
uniform and military boots was
an excellent Claudio while Dick
Farmer and Harry Moses, repos
ing In the colorful regalia of
the Oregon National Guard, car
ried their roles to new heighths.
Mclba Winston as Hero, was
as pleasingly demure as ever
while Ethel Mae Robblnette as
Beatrice, reached a new level.
All members of the cast were
given unreserved acclaim for
their characterizations.
Tonight, patrons will see a
modern dressed version of "The
Comedy of Errors." Tomorrow
nights "As You Like It" will
close the sixth annual reoer-
toire. Capacity crowds are ex
pected for these two shows. The
curtain will rise at 8:30.

without doing ahyone but the
promoters any good.
To make the plan successful,
all business houses and others
must cooperate fully and sin
cerely, Frank Hull, committee
secretary emphasized. No con
tributions should be made in
any solicitation not approved by
the committee but no one will
be obligated to contribute to
any approved solicitation, he
stated. All forms of solicitation!
are embraced, whether the soli
citation is made in person, by
mail or by telephone, he ex
plained. The plan of solicitation con
trol is intended for the protec
tion of the business men them
selves as well as the general
public, Mr. Hull asserted. Pri
mary object, he said, is to put
an end to solicitation by out
siders who take money from the
city without rendering any pro
portionate service to the com
munity. All applications for solicita
tion are to be made to Mr. Hull
at the Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce. To make the plan
completely effective, Mr. Hull
asked that all local organiza
tions of whatever character ap
ply to him for approval of any
kind of solicitation they might
contemplate at any time.
An increase in solicitation of
various kinds lately led to for
mation of the control commit
tee, Mr. Hull related. He added
that control is being exercised
with marked success in many
other cities and declared that
with proper cooperation the
same kind of complete success
can be attained here.
