'Going to Prison 'Sale
Profits Store Owner
Memphis. Tex. (U.f Ray
mond Ballew it an opportunist
he made money out of going
to prison.
Ballew is In prison now, be
coming familiar with his sur
roundings for the next two
years. But in this Texas Pan
handle town people still are
talking about his sales promo
tion and advertising all based
on his prison sentence.
Two years ago Ballew, owner
of an automobile and electric
appliance store, wounded a po
liceman. Convicted of assault
with intent to murder, he was
sentenced to two years.
Two months ago the Texas
court of criminal appeals upheld
the conviction.
Ballew was far from down
hearted. Instead, he started a
sales campaign, capitalizing on
his approaching prison term,
and put over a merchandising
event never before witnessed
here.
Here's what Ballew did:
He walked down Main street
two doors to the office of the
Memphis Democrat and bought
a quarter-page ad. It said, in
part:
"Yes, folk, it's true. I'm not
going to be with you much lon
ger! For in a little while I'll be
stripping sorghum and. hoeing
peas instead of peddling refrig
erators and radios ... I want to
sell at least 2S new refrigerators
so I can leave some bean and
potato money for the wife and
children while I'm eating off of
Uncle Bud . . . Frankly I've been
sold out so now I'm selling
out."
And he nearly did.
The first day, Ballew's cash
register rang up more than
$1,000. He cleaned his shelves.
literally. He bought more, in
cluding a truckload of refrigera
tors. He hired more salesmen.
In two weeks he sold $8,000
worth of merchandise. That was
one week before his departure
for prison.

Ashland. Aug. 9. (Spl) The
Lake of the Woods road, via
Dead Indian district from Ash
land, will be completed and
opened for travel by August 25,
Karl Janouch, Rogue River na
tional forest supervisor, assured
directors of the Ashland cham
ber of commerce Thursday.
Every dollar has been used
getting the road open,, however,
he said, and surfacing must be
done next year.
Janouch tossed cold water on
Ashland hopes that the city will
get a road direct to McDonald
basin around the Ashland water
shed from Nutley street, but in
dicated that plans are being
pushed for a route to the winter
sports area by way of Wagner
creek.
The local route would be too
steep, crooked and unprepared
to be practical, it was stated.
A side camp will be estab
lished for the CCC on Wagner
creek, where barracks are be
ing built. Work will be done
in lower 'elevations in winter,
and higher in summer.
Completion will be a matter
of several years.

CAUSE OF BLAZE
AT FRUIT PLANT
An incinerator lacking a
screen top was blamed by the
fire department today for the
grass blaze that late yesterday
afternoon scorched a pile of lug
boxes and sent the firemen
under a general alarm to the
Pinnacle Packing company's .
plant No. 2 at the end of South
Front street. 1
Some of the trash paper being
burned in the incinerator flew
out the uncovered top and ignit
ed the grass in the lot adjoining
the plant. Edward Canoose. as
sistant fire chief said. Before
the fire could be put out, part of
a large pile of lug boxes was
scorched. Damage was nominal,
however.
The fire department sent Its
two large pumpers to the scene
and firemen laid in one line of

President Asks
Peace Prayers
September 8th
Hyde Park. N. Y.. Aug. 9
(J") President Roosevelt has
set aside Sunday. September
8. as a day of p'rayer when
Americans of every creed and
denomination should ask God
"to grant to this land and to
the troubled world a right
eous, enduring peace."
"When every succeeding
day brings sad news of suf
fering and disaster abroad."
he said in a proclamation, "we
are especially conscious of the
divine power," and "it is
seemly that we should pray
for God's blessing on our
country and for the establish
ment of a just and permanent
peace" among all nations.
ADOS 2 TEACHERS
employes had laid a line of the
company's hose and the blaze
was put out before it could get
a good start on the pile of boxes
and thus threaten the plant
itself.
Mr. Canoose indicated that
steps would be taken to have a
screen top placed and kept over
the incinerator. The general
alarm was sounded at 4:32 p. m.
Gold Hill. Aug. 9 (Spl.) The
1941 school budget was accepted
last night at a board meeting,
with a S percent increase to the
original budget. The increase
was voted to enable the board
to hire another high school
teacher in order to offer a more
comprehensive course. With this
addition to the high school staff
there will be five teachers.
Another grade school teacher
was also allowed on the budget
and the board hired Miss Grace
Blgham of Central Point who
will teach the third grade.
Schoul will commence here on
September 9 this year, instead
of September 3 as originally
scheduled, which will permit
more time for completion of
several improvements to the
school building and gymnasium.
The bid for sealing of the gym
nasium was awarded to Jack
Pinkerton and the outside paint
j job on the gym was awarded to
jame rtyan.
Warren Coppick received the
contract for painting the interior
of the new classroom which has
been completed for the third
grade.
