TO FOREST AREAS
Shaded Lakes and Pools of
Sylvan Land Offer Cool
Way to Enjoy Summer
The following recreational
bulletin was issued today by
Rogue River national forest
headquarters:
"Swimming In the shaded
lakes and pools of the Rogue
River national forest is the most
pleasant thing we can imagine
during this hot weather.
"In the Applegate district, the
McKee Bridge camp offers ideal
swimming. Four miles farther
on at the Beaver Sulphur camp
there is a similar pool at a camp
ground, not so well known and
therefore not crowded as it usu
ally is at McKee.
"At Dead Indian Soda Springs
a swimming pool has been pro
vided in connection with the re
sort. Lake o' Woods is, of course,
famed for its beaches and swim
ming. "
Hike Combined
"Blue lake and Round lake
offer swimming in combination
with a two-mile hike by trail
from the Blue Rock lookout. .
"At Union Creek and Natural
Bridge the water is too cold for
any but the most hardy, but
sandy beaches are used for sun
ning and shallow water for!
wading.
"Fishing in smaller streams of
the forest is about ended for the I
summer. In Fourmile lake, good
catches of silversides are being i
taken with cluster eggs, and
rainbow and eastern brook with
flies and trolling with trout
orinos. The Fish lake season
closes August 15 and very few
catches are being made there
now.
Trolling Succeeds
"Lake o' Woods is good for
perch and in Klamath lake large
rainbow are being taken by troll
ing. In Margaret lake of the
Sky Lakes group, eastern brook
are biting well. At Seven lakes,
the trout are not taking flies but
fair catches are being made with
bait. South and middle forks of
Rogue river are yielding good
catches with greyhackle flies.
"In the Rogue river from Pros
pect to Grants Pass trout fishing
is reported as fair, with best
lures flying caddis and royal
coachman. The summer run of
steelhead has not appeared, al
though an occasional one has
been taken with a small spinner.
A few salmon are moving in on
the spawning beds, but not in
sufficient numbers to make sin
gle egg fishing worth while.
"The huckleberry crop is past
its peak now but some berries
may be found in the more remote
spots at Huckleberry mountain
and at Blue Rock. At Parker
Meadows and upper south fork
of Rogue river there is fair pick
ing in patches not immediately
adjacent to the roads and trails.
The evergreen blackberries in
the Applegate district are begin
ning to ripen and will be at their
best in another week or two.
Camps for Picnics
"Picnics of organized groups
are now popular at Lake o'
Woods, where the White Pine
picnic area is reserved this week
for Lorenz Hardware company
and next week for the Business
and Professional Women of
Klamath Falls. Medford and
Grants Pass. This area, and
similar ones at the Union Creek
and McKee Bridge camps, with
community kitchens and large
tables, may be reserved by any
groups through the ranger or
supervisor's office.
"Conditions continue to be
critical for forest fires. Smoke
only while stopping in a safe
place, put your camp fire dead
out with water, and thereby do
your part In protecting the
forest."

the review at Fort Lewis, Wash.,

"Why Halt Ye Between Two
Opinions?"
Rev. Fred M. Weathcrford.
pastor, stated, "We are expect
ing one of the outstanding ser
vices of the campaign tonight at
7:45."
Saturday night Dr. Willing
ham speaks on, 'The Power of
the Devil and His Influence."
Dr. Willingham will address
the Sunday school at the open
ing period, at which time a great
rally has been planned. Profes
sor and Mrs. Tindley will also
participate. At 10:45 a. m., Sun
day, Dr. Willingham will speak
on, "The Work of the Holy
Spirit." At 7:45 p. m., which will
witness the conclusion of the
camp meeting, he will speak on,
"The Reaper's Time."

Sheriff Syd I. Brown left last
night for Oakland, Cal., to re
turn to Jackson county Albert
G. Mertz, charged with the pass
ing of some S800 in bogus
checks on Ashland merchants
and citizens in July. Mertz, ar
rested at Oakland this wck, has
waived extradition.
According to the sheriff's of
fice, Mertz told service station
and store proprietors he was In
line for a government check for
veteran's compensation. He also
cashed a few bogus checks In
Medford, the sheriff's office
stated.
