The giant patchwork known
as India if confusing complex
of racial, religious, cultural and
political rivalries over which
Britain gradually gained aomi
nance in the 17th and 18th cen
turiei.
India's size end difficult geo
graphical nature make for lack
of unity. It is rich In manpower
and natural resources.
With 6,000 miles of land
frontier and 5,000 miles of sea
board. India has an area of more
than 1,808,000 square milesa and
crowded population of more

These millions between one-
fifth and one-sixth of the earth's

With the blood of many races
in their veins, these peoples
speak more than 200 languages
and dialects and practice many
religions, some of them bitterly
antagonistic to one another.
The vast Hindu group has
240,000,000 adherents in India,
the Moslems some 77,000,000.

which are governed by repre
sentatives of the crown and a
native India of more than 860
states ruled with varying de
grees of authority by native
princes who hold their power
through treaties and alliances

Hindu majority and the militant
Moslems, who provide some of
the best fighting men In the Brit
ish Indian army, and that be
tween the native princes, who
depend largely on British sup
port to hold their thrones, and
the independence-seeking masses
led by the congress party, have
complicated Britain s problems.

Only trickles of refugees,
mostly plodding afoot or riding
bicycles, are allowed to pass
through this bottleneck of the
Jealously guarded pathway to
their former homes in German
occupied territory.
A day of watching the lines of
war-wanderers seeking to return
to their home towns or farms
traveling on foot m automo
biles, bicycles and wagons-dis-
closes that a major element in
the slowness is the rigid control
the Germans exercise along the
border between the occupied and
unoccupied zones.
Rigid Examinations
(Moulins lies along the Allien
river In central France, about
160 miles southeast of Paris and
30 miles north of Vichy, tempor
ary capital of the Petain govern
ment.) Every returning refugee must
have papers approved by French
and German control stations and
must undergo examinations by
the Germans before being per
mitted to pass the barriers.
Under German instructions,
the French have established
control barriers two mile from
Moulins, leaving a "no man's
land" between these barriers
and a German control station at
a bridge over the Alllers river
outside Moulins.
Refugees have piled up at
these barriers like driftwood,
while waiting long periods for
examination of their papers.

wald, which had been operating
in the Mediterranean, was con
sidered lost. (The Italian high
command announced the sink
ing of the Oswald earlier this
week.)

OF DEFENSE EFFORT

A vast network of plants where
Uncle Sam would hoard frozen
foods against the day of national
emergency has been proposed
here as a defense measure.
Roger Sprague, an engineer
who for more than 20 years has
been engaged In the construc
tion and promotion of locker
plant facilities for frozen foods,
likens the proposed system to
a "line more formidable In the
event of war than the Maglnot
and Siegfried lines combined.
Sprague said steps have been
taken to present the plan to the
national defense board. As evi
dence of its practicality, he
pointed to the operation of
2.700 frozen foods and locker
plants for patrons from the
Pacific northwest to the eastern
seaboard.
The plants now being used
he described as well-equipped
food processing, storage and
distributing centers, serving the
needs of communities In which
they are established.
