German army of occupation in
i France has ordered closing of
I the Swiss-French border from I across the frontier was banned
Geneva to Basel, effective Aug.

Many observers viewed this

Britain might reach the outside
world.
Even the passage of farm
workers and farm owners with
jobs or property in villagc
Axis powers were reported massing for the invasion of Eng
land, but Virginio Gayda, Fascist editor, hinted it might not be
immediate. Map shows: (1) Reported bombing of Swansea and
Plymouth. (2) Germans and Italians reported massing on coast
line. (3) Rail communication into unoccupied France closed.
(4) Reported concentration of Spanish troops back of Gibraltar.
(6) Massing of Italian planes at Sardinia.

SPY TALK TICKLES
E!
New York. Aug. 2. U.R) Dr.
Gerhardt Alois Westrick, Nazi
commercial emissary, appeared
at the motor vehicle bureau to
day to find out about the re
vocation of his automobile li
cense because he did not notify
'the bureau of a change of ad
dress, and while there said he
was highly amused by the "spy
stuff in the papers."
Dr. Westrick had been the
subject of considerable publicity
following disclosures that he had
established headquarters at an
estate in Scarsdale and had re
ceived a number of American
business men there.
In good humor, except when
camera men attempted to take
photographs, he said his sole
duty in this country was to pre
pare the way for trade between
Germany and the United States
after the European war.
Washington. Aug. 2. f.'P) The
house tax subcommittee voted
tentatively today to permit na
tional defense contractors and
subcontractors to deduct the
entire cost of defense plant
expansions from their taxable
earnings. The deductiton would
be 20 per cent annually for five
years.
At the same time, the com
mittee also voted to recommend
to the full ways and means
committee that this defense
plant amortization plan be in
corporated in a single bill along
with an excess profits tax and
a suspension of the Vinson
Trammell act restriction on
warship and military plane
profits.

with the Canadian wheat board
and covers "this cereal year,
July, 1940. to 1941."
No figures on the price of
the wheat or on the previous
quantity purchased were available.
