LAG DURING JULY
Thirteen permits with a total
value of $12,365 were issued
from the city building inspec
tor's office in July, a sharp de
cline under the $28,840 in the
same month last year and a
slight drop under the $15,275
total in June of 1940, it was
shown in figures released to
day. Of the 13 July permits, one
was for the construction of a
new residence at a stated cost
of $3,600 and one was for a
new business structure at a
stated cost of $2,000. The others
were for reshingling, repairing
and remodeling.
The St.. Mark's Episcopal
church, Oakdale avenue and
Fifth street, applied for a per
mit yesterday to reshingle at a
stated cost of $250.
Iline Keeney of 628 Pine
street applied for a permit to
reshingle a private garage at a
stated cost of $50.
From the Czarks to the mov
ies is no easy matter for a corn
fed lassie from the hills but
for Alan Mowbray it means an
extra bonus for taking Judy
Canova, screen and radio's most
popular hillbilly songstress, to
Hollywood by mistake in "Scat
terbrain," which heads the dou
ble bill opening a three-day
run today at the Rialto theater.
Mowbray, as a movie talent
scout, is. sent to the Ozarks to
bring back a nightingale but
in a mixup, brings back Instead
Judy Canova (the "Jenny Lind"
Ozarks). Her genial
homespun humor and easygoing I
manners make her an overnight
sensation, but Hollywood is
really taken by surprise when
her kinfouk start moving in on
the film city. Others in the
cast of the movie based upon the
popular hit, "Scattcrbrain," in
clude Billy Gilbert. Ruth Don
ncllv, Luis A'.ocrni and Wallace
Ford.
"Pioneers of the West," fea
turing the Three Mesquiteers,
plays as the companion Western.
troduction with side-splitting
laughter.
The story is one of domestic
mixups arising from double
identity. Allan Jones has a
dual role as twin brothers, one
an overbearing Grecian gen
eral and the other a romantic,
golden-voiced lad from Syra
cuse (Greece). He has twin
slaves, both played by Joe Pen
ner. Martha Raye is married
to one of the Penner twins.
Irene Hervey is married to one
of the Jones twins and Rose
mary Lane becomes the sweet
heart of the other.
When the interloping twins
are mistaken for the husbands,
the ensuing situations are among
themost hilarious ever screen
ed. But to tell more of the
story than its basic situation is
to "spring" many of the genu
inely amusing twists and turns
the tale takes along its uproar
ious road.
