4 Mayor Urges Citizens to Join
In Tribute to Sugar Industry
Mayor Charles C. Furnas to
day proclaimed August 2 to
17 as "Oregon Sugar Tine,"
and urged recognition and sup
port by Medford citizens of the
rapidly growing beet sugar In
dustry of Oregon.
The Amalgamated Sugar com
pany plant at Nyssa, described
as the nation s newest beet su
gar factory, began its operations
In the fall of 1938, it was point
ed out by David W. Evans, of
Stevens and Wallis, the firm's
public relations counsel.
Last year it produced 728,000
100-pound bags of sugar, and
this year will produce between
900,000 and 1,000,000 due to a
larger beet acreage and better
crop, he said.
With 18,250 acres in the area
now growing beets, the factory
this year will have a payroll
of $300,000.
In addition, benefits from the
new industry will be reflected
in the Medford area through
the new beet seed industry.
Where formerly Germany was
depended on chiefly for it, the
Oregon seed will go for farms
in Idaho, Utah and California,
as well as eastern Oregon,
Evans said.
Mayor Furnas' proclamation
follows:
"It is well recognized that
the future industrial growth of
Oregon is dependent upon the
encouragement of all phases of
agriculture throughout the state.
"Likewise, this industrial

that idle prairie lands under
the Vale-Owyhee project have
become productive and the

area is now a successful and
profitable farm endeavor.

Medford extend hearty best

agricultural area and commend
the Amalgamated Sugar com

prosperity of Oregon.

Cupid Fails to Capitalize
On Conscription Expectancy
By United Press.
The possible Imminence of military conscription has failed to
stampede the American male into marriage as it did in the
spring of 1917, a United Press survey indicated today.
Marriage license bureaus
throughout the nation reported
few gains in applications either
since January 1 or since con
gress began considering a con
scription bill which would re
quire millions of eligible bach
elors between 21 and 31 to re
port for military training for
one year. Married men would
be exempt.
The volume of licenses issued
during June this year was the
greatest of any month this year
in at least 42 states, but li
cense clerks thought that was
only- because it was June. In
some states it was attributed to
a desire to avoid newly imposed
physical examination require
ments for applications
struck Robert on the head. Both
boys tumbled 40 feet to the
bottom of the cliff. It could
not be determined definitely
but authorities thought that the
rock inflicted the fatal injury.
Condition of the Hilkey boy
was reported much improved
today. He is under treatment
at the Osteopathic hospital. He
suffered multiple lacerations.
contusions and abrasions and
shock. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Oliver Hilkey, Butte
Falls.
Funeral services for the
Schnurr youth will be held at
1:30 p. m. tomorrow in the Perl
chapel. Burial will take place
in the Butte Falls cemetery. Ko-
Registrar James A. Burke of bert .was the son of Mrs. Edward
Boston said 115 licenses were
issued at his office on July 29
to set a new day's record. It
was 13 more than were issued
in April, 1917. He said 99 of
the men were of draft age and
raid a few made inquiries about
"time allowances" to avoid con
scription. New Orleans reported an in
crease of 85 licenses during
July or since conscription has
been debated in congress but
bureau officials said the gain
was not abnormal. Other minor
gains this month were noted at
San Francisco, in several Iowa
counties and Milwaukee, Wis.
Cook of Butte Falls.
SKULL FRACTURE
CAUSED DEATH OF
BUTTE FALLS BOY
Robert E. Schnurr, the 18-year-old
Butte Falls boy fatally
injured in a cliff accident in
the remote Blue canyon region
Tuesday afternoon, died of a
basal skull fracture, the cor
oner's office stated today after
a post mortem examination had
been made.
With his brother, Roy, and
Leonard Hilkey, 16, also of,
Butte Falls, the Schnurr youth
was climbing a cliff when thei
accident occurred. A large rock,
which gave way under Leon-i
