(JP) Ely Culbertson, who has
stopped playing bridge, has
gone into politics with all the
enthusiasm he ever gave to
cards because:
"The American people have
handsomely supported, shower
ed wealth upon me, and now
I want to do something to ex
press my gratitude, to serve
them in congress and do what
I can for them."
So the "king ot orldge" is
gunning or the Democratic
nom i n a t i o n as Connecticut's
congressman-at-1 arge. Party
leaders haven't said yet what
they think of hia candidacy.
"They ask so much in Amer
ica, 'Why don't some of these
rich men get into politics and
seek to better it?' Well, that's
what I'd like to do to do some
thing for the underdog," he
says.
Is Linguist
Culbertson, born in Russia of
an American father whose an
cestry made him eligible to join
the Sons of the American Revo
lution, promises, If nominated,
- to campaign in Ukrainian,
French, Russian, German and
Italia n all languages with
'which he Is familiar.
Mr. and Mrs. Culbertson, di
vorced but on extremely friend
ly terms, occupy a 65-acre
state here, he living In the man
sion house and she in one of
the six "cottages" (actually large
residences) on the property.
Their children, 12-year-old
Joyce and 11-year-old Bruce,
spend five months a year with
their mother and the other
seven with their father.

The two Rothschilds were
Baron Edouard, head of the
French branch of the family's
far-flung banking operations,
and Baron Maurice, a member
of the French senate.

Complaints of Fifth Col
umn Activity Arranged.
Law enforcement officers of
Jackson county met in the court
house auditorium - yesterday
afternoon with J. D. Swenson,
special agent in charge of the
Portland office of the federal
bureau of Investigation, to com
plete arrangements for expedi
tious handling of information
and complaints concerning mat
ters affecting national defense
and internal security.
The conference was one of a
series being held In a number of
cities between representative of
th F. B. I. and state, county and
local police and sheriffs.
Aid Needed
In an F. B. I. news release ex
plaining the purpose of the
meetings, it was stated that the
active assistance of police de
partments, sheriffs' offices and
state police organizations was
needed by the F. B. I. in its
work on violations of the fed
eral espionage, sabotage and
neutrality acts.
The release said, further, that
it is important that all infor
mation relating to such matters
be forwarded by private citizens
as well as officials directly to
the F. B. I. office in this area."

The meeting yesterday, ac
cording to the F. B. I., "char
acterized a still further and
closer relationship between the
r. B. I. and local agencies of
law enforcement with reference
to the vital problems of national
defense and internal security.
The wholehearted pledges of co
operation and splendid responses
have been a source of gratifica
tion to the F. B. I. and likwise
should be to the citizens of this
state. In due course arrange
ments of this type will be com
pleted with all law enforcement
agencies of the country."
