tive officer of Medford district
CCC headquarters here, stopped
briefly in Medford yesterday
to greet friends. He was en
route by motor to Tort Lewis,
Wash., where he has been as
signed for 28 days of active
duty with the army as a major

Judy Canova, the screen's
Number One hillbilly song bird,
comes to the Rialto theatre to
morrow for a three-day run in
her newest extravaganza of hill
billy songs and cuttips, "Scatter
brain." With the famous screen
and radio star are such out
standing funmakers as Alan
Mowbray, Ruth Donnelly, Eddie
Joy, Jr., Luis Alberni and Billy
Gilbert. Others include Wallace
Ford and Isabel Jewell. In the
film the "Jenny Lind of the
Ozarks" sings the popular song
h 1 1 "Scatter Brain," around
which the story' is laid. Miss
Canova, by mistake, invades
Hollywood as a contest winner
and becomes an overnight sen
sation singing her mountain
lyrics.
"Pioneers of the West," fea
turing the Three Mcsquiteers,
will play as the companion
feature with "Scatterbrain.

On Vacation Kenneth An
thony, owner of a barber ship
on West Sixth street, and Mrs.
Anthony are on a two-weeks'
vacation trip to Kansas. They
planned to visit relatives in a
number of Kansas cities. On
their way home by the north
ern route they will visit rela
tives in Washington. They are
making the trip by car. The
barber shop business is being
carried on as usual.
Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, America's "sweet
hearts of song," are starred in "New Moon, coming to the
Craterian theatre Sunday. Set against the romantic back
ground of old New Orleans, the filmusical boasts 10 song
numbers. Featured in the supporting cast are H. B. Warner,
Mary Boland, George Zucco and Grant Mitchell among oth
ers.

Take Examinations Ten men
yesterday completed two days
of examinations for city fire
man. The merit rating exam
inations were given by the Med
ford civil service commission
to make up an eligible list for
the fire department. The re
quired athletic examination was
taken Monday, the written ex
amination yesterday. The men
Dancing Season at
Oriental Gardens
To Open Saturday
Of special interest to the
dancing public is the reopening
of Oriental Gardens, Saturday,
August 3. The large hall will
feature modern music by the
popular Steve Whipple s dance
band, with different vocalists,
a girls' trio and specialty nun
bers from time to time.
For the opening, Phyllis Mil
ler will be the featured vocal
ist. Ray Cook and his boys
will furnish good music for
the old-time hall. A large crowd
is expected for the opening
night as a "send-off" of the
new dancing season.

AT ROTARY MEET
The success of the country's
defense program depends upon
the complete support and coop
eration of a united citizenry,
Capt. Joseph W. Scobey, a re
serve officer and publicity offi
cer of the Medford CCC district,
told the Rotary club at its week
ly luncheon-meeting yesterday
in the Hotel Medford. Capt.
Scobey gave a comprehensive
picture of the national defense
program.
In the absence of Ward Ham
mond, president, John Day, vice
president, was chairman. Don
Baglcy was program chairman
and introduced the speaker.

elected Floyd V. Barrett as suc
cessor to Rolla A. Reedy, school
superintendent here for the past
four years, at a meeting last
night. Mr. Reedy had resigned
to become superintendent of
Canby Union high school. Mr.
Barrett has been superintendent
of Halsey school.
Other teachers elected includ
ed: First grade, Mona Ferns; sec
ond, Marie Prescott; third, Edith
Thompson; fourth, Laverne Rob

she has a light lunch. The Rialto is looking for a name for
the cub and wants all the little boys and girls to mail in
their suggestion for a name. The name of the winner and the

COAST RAILROADS BUSY
Portland, July 31 W The
three weeks from August 4 to
August 28 may resemble the
busy days of 1917-18 on north
west railroads. Union and South
ern Pacific offices Indicated to
day. Additional trainmen and oth
er employes, numbering about
400, have been or soon will be
put to work to move the 39,000
to 30,000 regular army and na
tional guard troops during the
Chehalia-Fort Lewi area maneuvers.
