Billy Hulen Says;
Original House
Of David Will
Play Wednesday
To straighten out mistaken
Idea tome fani have here that
the House of David baseball
club has disbanded and won't
be here Wednesday night to
play Satchel Paige and the Kan
sas City Monarch!, let ui ex
plain that the team that broke
up recently in Council Bluffs,
Iowa, was not the original Is
raelite House of David team
from Benton Harbor, Mich.
This latter outfit, with the
famous Long John Tucker, one
of the greatest first basemen
that ever drew on glove, and
that amazing "pepper game"
involving Tucker, George
(Andy) Anderson and J. L. (Doc)
Tally, is the club that'll be here
Wednesday. Definitely, for cer
tain. Several years ago there was
only one House of David team
but friction developed and the
two factions running the club
split up. One went one way and
the other the other way, both
with teams. The outfit to play
here Is the original, still comes
from Benton Harbor and was
reorganized by Mary Purnell.
It Includes Tucker, in his 17th
year with the club; Tally, vet
eran of 87 years with the team;
Anderson, playing his 12th
season with the bewhiskered
boys, and many others who
have been members of the club
for more than three campaigns.
This other House of David
team disbanded in Council
Bluffs when the players were
unable to get their money from
Manager Ham Oliver. The
dough amounted to $90 a month
per player.
So, any fear customers may
have thai there won't be a
game tomorrow evening can
be forgotten. There will not
only be contest, but prob
ably the greatest one ever
staged In this city. And that's
no over-statement, for the two
clubs are tecognised as being
the nation's top barnstorming
nines, playing a brand of ball
equal to double-A calibre.
The Davids will come to Med
ford with a six-year winning
record seldom, if ever, equaled
by a traveling club playing
practically every day and visit
ing nearly every state In the
union. During the past half
dozen seasons the whisker gang
has won 817 and lost 281 for a
.734 percentage. And that
against the country's finest
semi-pro teams and many class
D, C, B, A and AA clubs In
organized baseball.
Whether the Benton Harbor
genta can beat the Monarchs Is
a moot question, what with Mr.
Paige and his fireball being
present. But whether Mr. Paige
will fling the entire nine inn
ings isn't known, either. If he
does, and he might, the odds,
of course, would be all against
the Davids. When Satchel loses
a contest, Abner Doubleday
turns over In his grave, and
ha has been mighty quiet for
the past decade.
However, if Paige works only
a few Innings, say about three
or four, the Davids might cop
the verdict. As a matter of fact,
we understand that, man for
man, the Davids are slightly
stronger than the colored boys, !
but, naturally, are not so potent
when Paige is pitching for the
Monarchs.
Speaking of Paige, who Is
sometimes called the "colored
Rube Waddell" because of his
eccentricities, here are a few
notes on his career:
One season he averaged
15.4 strikeouts per game. He
holds victories over such
white hurlers et Dlny Dean.
Daffy Deen. Schoolboy Rows.
Tommy Bridges, Mike Rybe
end Joe Bowman. Joe DiMag
glo, after facing Satchel once,
declared, "He's the fattest
there Is." In 193S he pitched
and wen five games In one
week, allowing only three
runs In the five contests. In
1933 he won 31 and lost four.
- and blanked the opposition 18
times. The same year he
hurled (2 Innings of consecu
tive scoreless ball, and won
II straight.
On June 28, 1934, he fanned
nine straight hitters et Wll
mlngton, Del., and came back
the next day to whiff eight in
a row at Utica, N. Y. He was
nicknamed "Satchel" because nf
his gigantic feet. He Is 31 years
old (probably hit baseball age),
and it terrific.

It brought the Jitterbug a one
fall verdict over Notre Dame't
Jimmy Goodrich in last night's
main event before a nice crowd
in the armory.
Until Hollywood Danny lift
ed up Jimmy and slammed him
to the canvas on the back of
hit neck, the popular Goodrich
had all the better of the action.
In fact, it wasn't even close.
Goodrich, right off the bat.
started working on McShane's
left arm. And right to the
end Danny was grimacing and
groaning as be attempted, with
out success, to break the ter
rific arm-bar and arm-breaker
Goodrich was making him un
happy with.
At the 20-mlnute mark, Dan
ny maneuvered around to that
he could lift Goodrich off the
floon, and when he did it was
all over. He rammed Jimmy's
neck hard to the carpet, and
that completed the evening's en
tertainment. Goodrich, stunned,
was unable to continue.
It wat a tough match, and
as expected Goodrich was a
worthy foe for the former light
heavyweight champion. Danny,
as a matter of fact, wat so thor
oughly annoyed by the arm-bar
that he didn't take time off to
get In his famous brand of dirt.
He spent all his time trying to
shatter the hold.
Bob Kenaston of Gold Hill
fouled out to George Wagner
in the middle event, the end
coming in the fourth round after
each had taken a fall. Repeat
ed Illegal punches, kicks, hair
pulls, etc., caused a wrestling
commissioner to raco to the
ringside and order Referee Earl
Yoakley to award the match to
Wagner, which he did with
pleasure.
A leg pinwheel gave George
the first tumble in the second
round, he supplementing the
pinwheel with a leg-breaker
that forced Kenaston to quit
to save his underpinning from
being broken off at the knee.
Kenaston evened the count
in the third heat with a back
arm stretch, after softening up
Wagner with a flock of blows to
the body and an occasional foot
to the ribs.
Mike Nazarian. the big Ar
menian newcomer, lived up to
his advance reputation as a
tough monkey, and a mean one.
He grabbed a two-out-of-three
fall decision from Otis Cling
man in the opener, using leg
straps for both tumbles after
hammering Otis all over the
ring.
Nazarian'! falls came In the
second and fourth rounds, while
Clingman employed a cradle
hold and a shoulder stand in
the third to obtain a press.
It was announced that next
Monday would be the last
ladies' night program.
