man officials SB id today they
were astonished that the Dutch
Hilversum radio had broadcast
yesterday the report of a peace
mediation appeal to President
Roosevelt on behalf of "the
Netherlands committee for or
ganization of an international
peace conference at The Hague."
They said, moreover, that the
recent speech of British Foreign
Minister Lord Halifax, reject
ins Adolf Hitler's reichstag
peace offer, had closed all dis
cussion of peace; therefore, any
rumors of a new German offer
are "too silly for an official
rejoinder."

was merely the hobby of one

was reuarded today as an op
portunity for southern Demo
cratic supporters of the Repub
lican presidential nominee to
ease their voting consciences.
Willkie sources in Colorado
Springs, Colo., reported he was
studying a new party as a
means of permitting Democrats
to vote for him without los
ing their party affiliation. Bolt
ing Democrats lose party affili
ation in some southern states.
So far as party disciplinary
rules are concerned, observers
agree there would be little the
oretical difference In a Demo
crat voting for Republican or
independent electors.
Willkie-for-President clubs
have been organized In several
states of the traditionally-Democratic
south.
A group of Independent Dem
ocrats and Republican candi
dates started suit to force a
secret ballot in South Carolina's
general election. South Caro
lina voters, provided with a
Democratic or Republican bal
lot by the party, are required
to vote It straight. This sys
tem deprives them of ballot
secrecy, they contended In the

strike at Alcatraz federal prison
had ended today and all the
convicts on "The Rock" were
back on their usual rations
after two weeks of self-imposed
dieting.
Warden James A. Johnston
said he was convinced the pris
oners on the San Francisco bay
island started the "strike" in
hope of arousing public sym
pathy and. perhaps, of bringing
about modification of the stern
disciplinary rules there.

Oregon state fairgrounds, larg
est public gathering place in
Salem, have accommodated 30,
000 people at the annual fairs
and should prove ample in size
for the crowds which will at
tend the ceremony of notifying
Senator Charles L. McNary, Au
gust 2d, of his nomination as
Republican candidate for vice
president, Gov. Charles A.
Sprague said today.
The notification will be held
in the late afternoon.
The governor and J. D.
Mickle, director of the depart
ment of agriculture and of the
state fair, conferred here yes
terday with Ralph H. Cake,
Republican national committee
man for Oregon.
Arrangements for the notifi
cation arc being made by ths
national committee, the gov
ernor said.
The state fair grandstand will
seat 7,500 persons. At least
an additional 2.000 may be
crowded into the plaza in front
of the stand.
With the fair scheduled to
open on September 2, the regu
lar public address system will
probably be available to carry
the voices of the speakers at
the notification ceremony
throughout the spacious ground,
the governor said.
