Oregon's conservation program
will provide employment
through the Civilian Conserva
tion Corps for 2.000 Oregon
young men, 194 war veterans
and 9.006 men from other states
in the quarter-year ending Sep
tember 30.
James J. McEntee, director of
the CCC. in announcing the fig
ures today, said 56 camps would
operate in this first quarter of
the new fiscal year.
Of the 11,200 enrollees to be
employed in Oregon, 5.200 will
work on forest improvement, de
velopment and protection, 1.800
on range rehabilitation, 1.200 on
reclamation projects, 1.000 under
the supervision of the general
land office, 800 in erosion con
trol on agricultural lands, 600
on wildlife projects, 400 in state
parks and 200 in Crater Lake
national park.
McEntee said opportunity
would be offered 591 Oregonians
to enroll in the CCC during the
present month as replacements
for men who have left to accept
private employment or whose
enlistment period has expired

inner government of the new
Konoye cabinet reached a de
cision today on relations with
Italy and Germany and informed
quarters asserted that it calls
for a closer working arrange
ment with the axis.
The question of whether the
Netherlands East Indies and
French Indo-China would be
taken under "protection" still
was unclarified.

understanding with Berlin on
any action in the South Seas.

noye and the other three of his
inner government ministers of
navy, war and foreign affairs

they reviewed the entire field of

Maj. Gen. Henry H. Arnold,
chief of the army air corps, told
farmers of the Matanuska valley
yesterday the army would need
enough produce to supply 8,000
men at its new air base at An
chorage next year.
He was impressed with the
possibilities of the farm colony
established by the federal gov
ernment several years ago.

the British West Indies, will
speak in the Medford Church of
the Nazarene at 10:45 a.m. Sun
day. She has been doing mis
sionary work in the British West
Indies and presents an interest
ing message on missionary acti
vities. She has also made a study of
the Indian mission work of Ari
zona and New Mexico and
speaks with great interest from
first-hand information and mis
sionary association with Indians
of these areas. The public is cor
dially invited.
