SOLVES OLD ONE
Two minor Medford boys
were arrested by city police yes
terday for the robbery of the
Severin electric shop Saturday,
and with their arrest came the
solving of the 10-months-old rob
bery of the Utopia tourist haven.
The two youths, 13 and 14
years old, went to the Severin
electric shop, 1303 North River
side avenue, Saturday after
noon to get a tire on one of
their bicycle's filled with air.
While the attendant was doing
this, they unlocked the cash box
and stole $31, which they later
divided, city police said.
In the course of being ques
tioned after their arrest, one of
the boys gave the names of two
other youngsters, who on Sep
tember 20, 1939, stole $30 from
the cash register of the Utopia
tourist haven. South Riverside
avenue and Barncburg road, po
lice explained. This robbery was
accomplished when one boy told !
the attendant the men's rest
room was out of order, and
while the latter was investiga
ting the money was taken and
the boys rode away on their bi
cycles. Police said that one of the
youths involved in the Utopia
robbery no longer lived here,
but that the other, and the two
who admitted taking the money
from the electric shop, would
appear in Juvenile court. The
one bdy also confessed to the
Utopia robbery, police stated.
Police explained that all three
boys had been In trouble here
at various times, for petty thiev
eries in stores.

ASHLAND GIRL IN
FIRST SOLO HOP
Miss Marilyn O. Christieb of
Ashland made her first solo
flight this morning at Medford
municipal airport.
She is the first girl student
of the government's civilian
training program to solo here.
There is one other girl in the
present class of 30 students. The
first class of ten students had no
girls in it.
Four more youths enrolled in
the course soloed this morning,
three having previously made
their initial hops alone.
The four new soloists were
Stewart W. Groesbeck of 504
Pennsylvania avenue, Martin T.
Luther. Jr., of Talent and Ed
ward L. Cate and William B.
Westfall of Ashland.
Alvin Kerr of Rogue River,
charged with abandonment of
an animal, in a complaint sign
ed by S. W. Richardson, was
given a six months' suspended
sentence by Justice of the Peace
Coleman yesterday, following
hearing of testimony in the
case. The animal in the case
was a female dog belonsing to
Kerr. The minimum penally
is $1 and costs, the maximum
60 days in jail or $100 fine.

the defense there was no in
tent to abandon the dog, an?
Kerr further stated he was now
trying to find a home for it.
It .was teitified that Kerr
had planned to leave the dog
with the Humane society, ana
was told to take it to the coun
ty pound near Phoenix. En
route, the dog became sick.

LAKE CREEK FIRE
CROSS QUICKLY QUENCHED
"The South Oakdalc gang"
is doing its part toward help
ing the Red Cross during these
trying times. The "gang" is
composed of four small girls
Patsy Terrell, Polly Hoffard,
Rose Ann hirnscn and Loir.
Hedrick and their ages range
from eight to ten years.
The "gang" has constructed a
booth at 423 Soutn Oakdalc
avenue, on the Ralph W. Ter
rell property. They donate ma
terial and make lemonade, iced
tea. flower leis and other wares,
which they sell to the public.
Yesterday their profits amount
ed to . 27 cents and today so
far they have taken In 45
cents.
All profits will be turned
over to the Jackson county
chapter of the Red Cross by
the patriotic little group. A
large sign, "Help the Red
Cross," decorates the booth.
A smoker-caused fire was
quickly spotted this morning on
the Rogue River national forest.
It occurred near the Milo Con
ley ranch on the Lake creek road
in the Lake o Woods district.
Mr. Conley and a forest look-out
discovered the blaze and it was
quickly put out.
About six acres of grass were
burned along the S. P. tracks
south of Ashland this morning,
state forest patrol headquarters
reported. The grass was ignited
by an S. P. locomotive, head
quarters said.
Three of the nine Rogue River
national forest fires set by light
ning Monday afternoon were re
ported out today. The other six
had not been found and it was
believed they went out by them
selves.

Art Laing of the California
Oregon Powercompany was th
speaker at last night's dinner
meeting of the Medford 20-30
club in Hotel Jackson, telling of
his experience on an air line
trip to Chicago and his visit to
the New York world's fair. He
also discussed the present eco
nomic conditions in the east.
Guests of the club, in addition
to Mr. Laing were Al Perlmut
ter, Ed Keogh and Harland Wiley.
The Youth committee ol
Townsend club No. 2 announces

Youth social evening Thurrdoy

stock market dropped back into
the doldrums today after an
early attempt to resume an ad
vance fizzled.
When the rally maneuver
struck a snag, traders who had
bought on the upturn in the
previous session, hurried to
lighten holdings. Gains of many
issues changed into net declines
of fractions to more than a point,
but some held part of the ad
vantage to the finish. Transac
tions approximated 375,000
shares.
Down most of the session were
United States Steel. Bethlehem,
Westinghouse, Du Pont, Chrys
ler, Douglas, Standard Oil of
New Jersey, Loft, Western
Union, American Can and Santa
Fe.
J. I. Case spurted 2 ',4 on a
single transaction. Also higher
most of the time were Allied
Chemical, Consolidated Edison,
Caterpillar, Union Carbide and
U. S. Rubber.
A rise ins bonds tapered into
