The $123,000,000 Weirton (W.
Va.) Steel company, headed by
Ernest T. Weir, new deal foe
who luccesfully battled the
NRA, today lost the first round
In a four-year fight against the
Wagner labor act, which Weir
has opposed as "government in'
terference in business."
Issuing a preliminary decis
ion in ill longest and costliest
case, the national labor rela
tions board ordered the concern
to disestablish independent
"company unions" at plants in
Weirton. W. Va.. and Steuben
ville, Ohio. Seventeen of 300
employes who claimed they
were dismissed for "outside
union activity were ordered re
instated with back pay.
Musi Cease Assault
The company was also direct
ed to "cease physical assaults
on union employes or inciting
others to such action." The de
cision said that "special watch
men" employed by the company
"roamed the streets, trailed
CIO sympathizers and assaulted
SWOC organizers." The CIO
called the watchmen a "hatchet
gang."
The board dismissed however,
a petition by the CIO steel
workers organizing committee
seeking recognition as bargain
ing agent for the 12,000 em
ployes of the company, main
unit of the National Steel cor
poration, of which Weir is
chairman. The board held the
SWOC had not established a
majority among the employes.
