f IN THIS YEAR when Amer.
team are traveling America in
greater numbers than never be
fore, the Black Hills and Bad
Lands of South Dakota are rap-
ildly gaining In popularity as
itourut attraction!.
Here in Oregon this may ap
pear on the surface to have
little meaning since the Black
Hills axe approximately 1S00
miles away. However, the
popularity of the Black Hills
and Bad Lands Is of consider
able significance to the Pacific
northwest. This scenic section
with its wealth of historical
background Is on the shortest
route between the densely
populated centers to the east
and Yellowstone National park
and the Pacific northwest
Oregon and the Pacific
northwest will share In the in
creased tourist crop of the
Black Hills section. From the
Black Hills westward all the
states are linked together in
the growing tourist industry
with each section co-operating
with the other sections in ad
vertising tourist attractions and
developing a business that
reaches to practically every
Individual.
"Get acquainted with your
neighbor, see what he has to
offer, then help him sell it to
the traveling public and he will
help you in turn." Such was
the theme of a travel develop
ment caravan which left Port
Band recently to tour the Black
Wills region. Northern Callfor
till. Oregon, Washington and
British Columbia were represented.
There are numerous routes
fthat can be taken from Port
land to the Black Hills. The
motorist has the choice of the
Evergreen highway In Wash-
One of the principal sights la the Black Hills country is the Mount Rushmore national mono
Bent where the faces of Washington. Jefferson. Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are
being carved into the granite of a mountain.
Ington and the Columbia high
way In Oregon in going
through the Columbia river
gorge. The Washington route
can be followed through Yak
ima to U. S. highway 10 with
a side trip to Grand Coulee
dam, then on through Spokane,
Wallace, Missoula, Butte and on
Into Yellowstone National park.
From Yellowstone one has the
choice of U. S. 14, IS and 20
through the Wyoming country
to Rapid City, which is the hub
for tours through the Black
Hills and Bad Lands.
The Oregon route along the
Columbia offers two choices,
one over U. S. highway 395 to
Spokane to U. S. 10 and the
other over U. S. 30 to Pocatello
and then on U. S. 191 to Yel
lowstone. 'Each route has plenty to of
fer in the way of attractions
during the three days required
to reach the Black Hills. The
northwest caravan followed
the first-named route with
overnight stops In Spokane,
Butte, Yellowstone and Casper.
However, the more direct route
from Cody, Wyoming, Is along
U. S. 14 to Sheridan and U. S.
18 to the Black Hills.
At Rapid City the Pacific
northwest caravan was wel
comed by Jarvis D. Davenport,
president, and R. L. Bronson,
executive secretary, and other
members of the Black Hills and
Bad Lands association.
The climax of any visit to the
Black Hills Is a trip to Mount
Rushmore National monument,
the shrine of democracy, where
the noted sculptor, GuUon
Borglum, has carved in the
0000-foot granite mountain the
faces of George Washington,
Thomas Jefferson, Abraham
Lincoln and Theodore Roose
velt Thirteen years in the mak
ing, there are still two years of
labor remaining, before this
great memorial ia completed.
These colossal carvings are
all the more remarkable be
cause the only trained men
working on the project have
been Sculptor Borglum and his
son, Lincoln Borglum. The
others have been local miners.
There are good highways
leading to the memorial and
where tunnels have been neces-
sary they have been constructed ,
so as to lorm a Iramtf for the
four faces in shining granite.
Nearest viewpoint is 1300 feet
from the carvings.
In addition to Rushmore
monument there is much more
to be seen in the Black Hills, a
region with a fascinating story
of earth making. This story
ranges from the ancient fossil
beds of Bad Lands National
monument where prehistoric
alligators, rhinoceroses, three
toed horses and other long
extinct animals once roamed,
to the lofty "needle" formations
which erosion has sculptured in
the granite high up the pine
clad slopes of the Black Hills.
In the southern Black Hills
region is Wind Cave National
park, between Custer and Hot
Springs. Wind cave lies in the
great Pahaspa limestone forma
tion which also contains sev
eral other large subterranean
caverns. Wind cave was dis
covered In 1881 when a hunter
was attracted by a strange
whistling caused by wind es
caping through a small hole in
some rocks.

PULLMAN SETUP
Justice Department Files
Suit to Separate Manufac
ture- Operation Sleepers
Philadelphia, July 12. (Pi
Nation-wide Justice department
investigation of the railroad
sleeping car setup moves today
into federal district court In a
civil action against the Pullman
companies and an imposing list
oi financial leaders.
Seeking to separate the man
ufacture of sleeping car equip
ment from its operation, the de
partment charged in a statement
outlining its case that the Pull'
man companies:
Have refused to operate
modern light-weight railroad
equipment purchased by the
railroads from any manufacturer
other than the Pullman-Stand
ard Car Manufacturing com
pany, and have threatened to
withdraw the existing sleeping
car service and operations if
railroads should buy and oper
ate themselves any cars made
by other manufacturers."
Rates Attacked
Further, the department said
it would attempt to prove that
the Pullman organization
through an operating monopoly
"charges the public artificial
and unreasonably high prices
for Pullman accommodations,
and exacts non-competitive and
onerous terms from railroads
for the sleeping car service
which it provides."
Among those named by the
department are J. Plerpont Mor
gan, Richard K. Mellon, Sewell
Avery, Alfred P. Sloan. Jr.,
Harold S. Vanderbilt, George
Whitney, C. W. Seabury, H. S.
Morgan, all directors of one or
more of the companies.
Production Hamstrung
Other defendants were listed
as the Pullman company, the
operating unit; Pullman-Standard
car Manufacturing com
pany, the manufacturing unit:
Pullman, Inc., holding company
which owns the first two; and
Pullman Car & Manufacturing
corporation of Alabama.
Forcing the railroads to use
its 6,000 sleeping cars, many of
which are more than 20 years
old, the Pullman company has
' hamstrung ' production of mod
ern equipment by independent
manufacturers, the department
charged..

FOREST AREAS
Mosquitoes Are Decreasing
at All Levels, Camping
and Picnicking at Best
The following recreational
bulletin was issued today by
Rogue River national forest
headquarters:
. "That there are now fewer
mosquitoes at all elevations is
probably the best news of the
week for recreationists In the
Rogue River national forest
The mosquitoes are always at
their worst for a short period
after the melting of snow; this
year the unusually early season
is resulting in a correspondingly
early freedom from these pests.
"Nights are cool and daytime
shade with cool breezes also of
fers relief from valley heat.
Roads and trails are all in good
condition, flowers still bloom
ing profusely in the higher
country and camping, picnick
ing and motoring are at their
best.
Fishing is excellent In most
of the upper streams and lakes.
In the Union Creek district, ex
cellent fly fishing is available
In the Rogue river at all parts
above Natural bridge: grass
hoppers are bringing good
catches In Bybee, Crater, Na
tional and Mulr oreeks for ang
lers who go away from the
highway for short distances.
Buck canyon, Fish Creek val
ley, and the Fish lake on the
Umpqua divide offer good op
portunities for those desiring to
leave the main-traveled routes.
"In the Butte Falls district
limit catches are being taken
from the south and middle forks
with grasshoppers and flies;
Blue lakes and Seven lakes are
yielding good catches, while In
Big Butte and its tributaries
fishing has been only fair.
Good catches are reported
from Sky lakes; Fish lake is
fair for eastern brook; at Four-
mile lake still fishing with
cluster eggs is bringing excel
lent catches of silversides and
rainbow are being taken on
troll with spinner and eggs or
with spinner and troul-Oreno.
In Little Butte creek above the
Dead Indian Soda Springs and
near the South Butte forest
camp good catches of trout are
being taken with grasshoppers.
At Hyatt lake bass are being
caught with artificial flies but
crappies are not biting so well
as usual.
"In the Rogue river outside
the national forest, trout fishing
is reported to be excellent its
entire length. The water is low
and clear and trout are rising
to royal coachman, grizzly king,
professor and queen of the
water flies. The trout are run
ning unusually small this year.
A few steelhead are being taken
but the summer run has not
reached this vicinity.
"Organization camps are in
full swing at Lake of the Woods,
with 100 Boy Scouts from the
Medford area, 25 Klamath Falls
Junior Police, a group of Klam

Scouts preparing their Camp
