poration, left today for his home
in Portland. He spent three days
here on business and with
James H. Owen, general man
ager of the lumber company.
He inspected timber over prin
cipal areas in the county.
Fined IS Leo R. Beckman,
51, of Oakland, Cal., was fined
$5 and $4.50 costs in justice of
the peace court this morning for
operating a car with four per
sons over 12 in the driver's
seat. Beckman pleaded guilty
after being cited by state po
lice. Car Collision City police re
ported that cars operated by
Woodrow H. Clower of Phoenix
and Frank Haynes of 199 Mc
Andrews road collided with
some damage at Eighth street
and Central avenue early this
morning. Nobody was injured,
the report stated.

to duty after a month's vaca
tion in the east, most of which
was spent at Miss Bell's home

plegate returned Wednesday to
Conrad, Mont., after visiting his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Applegate, of 1020 Court street
for a week. Donald has been
employed by the J. C. Penney
company in Conrad for almost
three years. He spent his va
cation last summer also with
his parents here.

I n Custody State police
learned today that a man, who
used the name of Dr. C. A.
Crane to allegedly pass several
fictitious checks here about two
months ago, was in custody in
Los Angeles. Crane, police said,
forged the name of a local den
tist on two checks and also was
! wanted in Klamath Falls, As
toria and Washington on the
i same charge. A warrant for his
arrest was issued here but po-
lice said they didn't know yet
where he would face prosecu
' tion.

last night from a fortnight's va

cluded two days at the Golden
Gate international exposition on
Treasure island. Traveling by
train, the two young women re
turned to Medford by way of
Klamath Falls where they spent
a couple of days as guests of
Miss Ward's brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ward.

from Klamath Falls was com
pleted by stage.

BIG SECRET TRUCK
Los Angeles, July 15. (IP)
An apparent attempt to destroy
a new giant secret military truck
was under investigation today
by federal agents and police
arson Investigators.
Fire broke out early today on
a high board fence behind which
the colossal machine was kept
under guard after a strenuous
four months' test by army en
gineers at Fort MacArthur.
At the same time, officials of
the Trojan Truck company said,
two men fled from the vicinity
of the nearby office.
C. D. Juneau, a company,
spokesman, said the truck, pow
ered by marine diesel engine
and driven at 65 miles an hour
by 12 rear wheels, was capable
of carrying a 90-ton load. As
wide as an ordinary street, it
was planned to carry two six-
inch anti-tank guns.

Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bel
gian playwright who wrote the
celebrated "Bluebird", arrived
from Lisbon, Portugal, on the
Greek liner Nea Hellas today, a
war refugee.
The 78 year old writer, wear
ing a gray wig held down by a
hair net, said that all he had
left In the world was the little
baggage with him.
He plans to stay with a friend
in New York until the war is
over and reestablish himself
with a new play about the Ca
tholic church which he wrote In
Portugal.
With him was his attractive
blonde wife, 30 years his junior,
whom he married 20 years ago.
She was carrying a cage with
two bluebirds.

plant in the Louisville, Ky., In
dustrial area to produce smoke
less powder was reported today
to have been agreed upon by
the war department and the I
DuPont Powder company.
Under the agreement the gov
ernment would build the fac-
