WIN OVER STARS
By the Associated Press
The Seattle Rainiers dug In
their heels last night and halted
their brief skid.
It took eleven Innings to beat
the up-and-down boys of the
Pacific Coast league, the San
Francisco Seals, S to 3, but fail
ure would have trimmed the
Rainier margin of league lead
ership to Sis games.
The Oakland Acorns nicked
Sacramento for their third
straight. 4 to 3.
Lou Novikoff, of Los Angeles,
lofted a three-run homer in the
ninth that made possible a 7
to 4 victory over San Diego.
The Portland Beavers, all but
forgotten in the league base
ment until this week, made it
three straight over Hollywood
with a workmanlike 2 to 1 vic
tory. Forrest Orrell gave the Stars
six hits. His game was won in
the sixth when Harry Rosen
berg tripled, scoring two. The
Stars flinger, rugged Ardizota.
gave only a half dozen safeties
in the eight innings he worked,
and his relief. Hi Bithorn, gave
none. The game, in contrast to
the earlier ones this week, was
unmarred by errors.
LEONARD TO REF
HOSTAK-ZALE GO
Seattle. July 12. (V) The
third man in the ring at the
15-round Al Hostak-Tony Zale
middleweight title bout a week
from tonight will be Benny
Leonard, retired undefeated
lightweight champion.
A telegraphic poll of the state
athletic commission yesterday
approved him. Secretary George
Adams said, and Promoter Nate
Druxman obtained his services
in a long-distance call to New
York last night. He will fly

The Grants Pass Merchants,
first-half champions of the
Southern Oregon league, and the
Medford Rogues, reported to
have been strengthened consider

at the fairgrounds park Saturday
night in the first S. O. L. game
to be played after dark this sea

o'clock.
In the other loop tilt, Crescent
City will play at Gold Hill Sun
day afternoon. Roseburg, fifth
member of the circuit, draws a
bye.

The Rogues, who three weeks
ago held the powerful Merchants
to a 9 to 2 victory, at Grants
Pass, will probably have Ray
Tungate on the pitching rubber,
although Harold McAbee, who
did a short trick with the Cra
ters, may get the starting call.
Tom Keevan is another hurler
the locals may call on for rubber
labor.
Grants Pass will send Chuck
Ostrom, Nig DiSordi or Jack
Cook to the mound. Ostrom may
get the starting assignment, as
DiSordi flung last week in the
Merchants' victory over Rose
burg.
The first-half champions will
field a nine boasting four regu
lars batting over .300. Joe Gray
powers the Merchant attack with
a mark of .475, which also is
good enough to lead the league.
Ostrom Is hitting .324, Woods

The Rogues are led at the
plate by Tungate, who is bat

If you're not a golfer "don't even know which end of the club

and cooler it is when you're thirsty or hot.
In less than a year and a half, Rainier Club has become
the favorite of thousands and thousands of westerners. Try
a cold bottle today savor Its unequalled flavor, light but

why iti selling way over a million bottles a month.

With an estimated 1,600
laughing fans in the stands, the
Chicago Colored Ghosts, barn
storming softballers, handed
Medford .Corporation its first
defeat of the year last night
at the stadium, 6 to 3.
The Ghosts clowned their
merry way through seven hi
larious innings, scoring when
ever they needed to, and wound
up their dizzy show by staging
a 10-minutes shadow game that
laid 'em in the aisles. The col
ored boys ended their shadow
exhibition in slow motion, and
literally brought down the
house. .
When they weren't running
bases the wrong way and good-
naturedly harrassing the Medco
players, the Ghosts were clout
ing Morrie Steiner, Medco hurl
er, for a dozen safeties, includ-
ign triples by Hood and Wilkin

In the meantime, big, lanky
Wilkinson, Ghost pitcher, was
holding Medco to two blows.
which were bunched in the sec
ond innings, with a walk, for
Medco's three tallies. With two
gone White walked, Keevan
singled to right and Bob Wil
son slammed a homer to right
centcrfield.
The Ghosts ran up their six
runs in early innings, then
broke out their wacky tactics.
But while they proved they
were polished comedians, they
also showed Medford fans the
best softbali team ever seen
here.
In the preliminary game,
Hunt's Cratcriana nicked the
Girls' Community club, 16 to
2, with A. Curry and P. Curry
hurling six-hit ball for the win
ners, and the losers committing
1 1 errors.
