AGAINST MARINES
Nipponese Determined to
'Make Something' of Inci
dentDemand Apology
Shanghai, July B. W) A
violent tirade against United
States marines wai spread today
across the front page of the
newspaper Talriku Shlmpo, gen
erally regarded as a mouthpiece
of the Japanese army In China,
as the aftermath of an interna
tional settlement incident.
Japanese authorities demand
ed an apology for "mistreat
ment" of Japanese plainclothes
gendarmes arrested by marines
in the settlement July 7.
The Tairiku Shlmpo declared
tii marines were "gentlemen
with human faces, but with the
skins of animals."
"Down With America"
Indignant patriots, it added,
had posted handbills with such
slogans as "Down with Amer
ica" and "Remove the Amer
ican hindrance to development
of east Asia."
Meanwhile Major Ceneral Sa-
buro Miura, commander of Jap
anese gendarmes here, demand
ing an apology for the July 7
aiikir, warned tnat ''a speedy
settlement ot the Incident is
necessary or the matter is likely
to take a grave turn.
Anti-British feeling also In
creased. Posters appeared de
manding withdrawal of British
troops from Shanghai.
Jap Apologises
Miura previously had apolo
gized for presence of the gen
darmes in the American defense
area of the international settle
ment in violation of an agree
ment not to enter without Amer
ican military authorities' con
sent. Col. Dewltt Peck, marine
commander, replied yesterday
"it's a lie" In denying the Jap
anese had been maltreated. In
letter to Col. Peck, Miura said
that despite his previous agree
ment to consider the Incident
closed, "discovery of new facts
revealing that the Americans in
sulted the entire Japanese army"
made necessary further conslde
ration of the case.
