in the nations defense system
is growing as the army and
navy presses construction of air
and sea bases, warships and
munitions.
With present facilities of the
Boston navy yard heavily taxed
by construction of new warships
and renovation and moderniza
tion of ships of the fleet, a new
navy yard at South Boston Is
being hurried toward comple
tion.
Primary construction at the
army's new northeastern air
base is well under way, and
the size of the navy's air base
at Squantum on Boston's south
shore is being tripled. On these,
in event of war, would depend
protection of New England's
factories, important cogs in the
nation's munitions industry.
Factories are busy turning
out orders for the army and
navy as the program to com
plete the services' necessary
stores of war materials con
tinues. The Watertown and
Springfield arsenals are work
ing night and day, the former
turning out coastal defense,
anti-aircraft and other large
caliber guns; the latter, Garand
rifles and small arms.

enlisted in the naval reserve and
given one month of training at
sea. After the one-month com
petitive course, selected candi

tional three-month shore course
leading to qualification for com
missions as ensigns in the vol
unteer reserve for general line
duties.

of information among the sev
eral agriculture departments, he

which might affect the free
flow of our various products
in Interstate commerce.
"Conditions are seldom so
critical that we do not have
time to permit the other states'
shippers an opportunity to ad
just themselves. I would suggest
that the agricultural interests of
our various states art entitled
to Intelligent advice and leader
ship from our group, to the end
that bureaucratic red tape may
be reduced to a minimum, the
free flow of interstate com
merce accelerated and the price
less heritage of free trade, as
provided for in our constitution.
