ALSACE PEASANTS FARM
HERDED BACK TO
F
Refugees Rounded Up In
Southern France by Nazis
Allegiance Wooed.

IN LAST
Basel, Switzerland, July S.
(P) Ten thousand German
(peaking farmers and peasants
of Alsace and Lorraine have re
turned to their homes from
southern France. It was learned
today, although isolated French
units in those provinces were
reported still resisting nazi
troops.
The vanguard of 700 was led
by pro-German Alsatians and
officers of the German army
of occupation.
The officers and civilian aides
rounded up groups in a refugee
center in southern France to be
repatriated to the provinces
which were ruled by "jermany
from 1871 to the end of the
world war.
Constant Flow
Since Sunday, there has been
constant flow back into the
frontier regions, where fields
had stood deserted tangles of
weeds and tall grass since the
atart of the war In September.
French sources said the Ger
mans are paying especial atten
tion to Alsace and Lorraine in
habitants In an effort to win
them over before peace terms
which may re-incorporate their
provinces Into the relch.
Some of the communities had
been scenes of bitter battles,
although many Maginot forts in
the open country were occupied
without fighting after the arm
istice. Other towns were un
touched by actual fighting but
were wrecked in dynamiting of
roads and bridges by retreating
troops.
French Uninformed
The National Zeltung of Basel
related that a Swiss citizen, af
ter obtaining German permis
sion to visit his farm across
the border, was met Monday
by a French sentry and con
ducted at gunpoint to a captain
commanding an isolated fort.
The Swiss showed the cap
tain the permit and a Basel
newspaper article of the end
of French resistance. The offi
cer turned away with tears
streaming down his cheeks say
ing "No, no. It cannot be true!"
This Swiss said the whole de
tachment believed the Rhine
river forts were still intact.
Communications had been cut
10 days previously by German
motorized units.
