LAKE-O-WOODS
07 MILES
By Karl Janouch.
This trip takes you to Lake
o' the Woods by way of Ash
land' and Fish lake, which is a
beautiful route and well worth
while.
Leave Medford and proceed
11 miles to the city of Ashland.
Another 2.6 miles brings you
to the Junction of the old and
new Pacific highways; turn left
on the old Pacific highway for
1.9 miles and drive to the junc
tion of the Dead Indian road,
where another lefthand turn
brings you to the Dead Indian
road. After driving through
country dotted with blue and
white lilac, meadow daisies
elderberry, buttercups, mustard
and yarrow, you enter the for
ested areas which made this
trip a most enjoyable one be
cause of the shade and cool
ness which they offer. Incense
cedar, ponderosa pine, white
fir, Douglas fir and sugar pine
tower into the sky on both
sides of the road, with an un
dergrowth of vine maple, elder
berry, oak, chinquapin and Ore
gon grape, the official flower
of the state.
In a short rime you rer.cn
Deadwood. The original road
here was built by Captain Ap
plegate and a band of Indians.
Deadwood was originally used
by the United States army as
a stage stop in their travel be
tween Fort Klamath and Rogue
river valley.
Just .4 mile farther on you
come to the Moon Prairie-Fish
Lake road junction where, turn
ing left, you soon enter a stand
of white pine. This timber has
the highest commercial value
of any coniferous tree growing
in the United States and is des
tined to bring renown to Jack
son county, since other white
pine stands in the United States
are scarce. This is a part of
the largest stand of white pine
in volume in the state of Ore
gon, and the symmetry and
form of this beautiful tree
make its aesthetic appeal equal
to its commercial value. Yew
trees make up a great deal of
the undergrowth of the white
pine stand. This picturesque
tree is used in the manufacture
of bows and arrows by arch
ers, and here again the aes
thetic and commercial values
clash.
Another 8.1 miles of travel
brings you to the junction of
the Robinson Butte road where
one may return to Medford via
Soda Springs resort if desired.
This is a pleasant trip by itself.
Should you return at this point,
you are encouraged to take the
trip to Robinson Butte Look
out, where a forest guard is
stationed. He will point out
the interesting features of the
surrounding country and furnish
you with any other information
desired.
Traveling on to Lake o the
Woods, you cross the North
Fork of Little Butte creek, one
of the most popular fishing
streams in Jackson county, on
the banks of which is the North
Butte forest camp for the ac
commodation of the fisherman.
Here you find a profusion of
dogwood, buttercups and mus
tard. In a short distance you reach
the junction of the Fish Lake
road from Medford via Butte
Falls. Following the direction
al sign to Lake o' the Woods
brings you to the Fish Lake
recreational area, where a limit
catch can usually be secured in
a few hours. The facilities and
. recreational advantages of this
lake were published heretofore.
You now proceed, driving an
other 6.4 miles there lies pic
turesque Lake o' the Woods,
nestled in a basin surrounded
by towering peaks and ridges

covered with timber. This lake
was discovered by Captain Ap
plegate when he was camping
nearby with a band of Indians.
He heard the singing of many
birds, and trying to locate them,
stumbled onto the lake which
he named Lake o' the Woods.
Along the shores of the lake,
forest camps, summer homes,
and the Lake o' the Woods
resort are situated in such a
fashion that the beauty of the
lake is not disturbed. Off. to
the south and east in the primi
tive area are Lake Harriette,
Lake Cmoo, and other lakes
all of the same intense blue.
These lakes are also stocked
with fish, and limit catches can
be easily secured.
During the summer.the own
ers of the 120 summer homes
located on the shores of Lake
o' the Woods enjoy the rest
and recreational facilities which
the lake affords. The camps
of the Campfire Girls, Boy
Scouts and other organizations
are located here. The Lake o
the Woods resort is on the cart
shore, and on each side of it
and among the summer homes
are improved campgrounds for
the accommodation of tourists
and campers who do not wish
to stay at the resort. Lake o
the Woods can be rightfully
called the "Goddess of Recrea
tion of Southern Oregon." It
is enjoyed especially because it
offers all types of recreation
swimming, fishing, boating,
camping and hiking. Also, pack
horses are available for trips
to Mt. McLoughlin, the Primi
tive Area, and other points ol
interest in the, surrounding ter
ritory.
On the north shore of the
lake is the Lake o' the. Woods
ranger station. The ranger, or
his representative, will welcome
you with the cordiality which
is a forest service character
istic and will furnish you with
any information you desire.
pointing out the recreational
features of this area, or will
assist in other ways to make
your visit enjoyable.
Leaving the ranger station
you arrive a tthe entrance road
to Aspen Point forest camp on
the shore of the lake, where
free overnight camping is per
mitted. Al lthe facilities for
outdoor camping are provided
and the shore along this camp
ground provides the best swim
ming beach at the lake. 'From
this point you view the mag
nificent Mt. McLoughlin rising
from the shore in lofty splen
dor. On the other side of the
resort is a free picnic ground
with a capacity of 200 to 300
persons, which is used by many
organizations. Adjacent to the
picnic ground is the Rainbow i
forest camp and on the south
shore of the lake the Willow !
Springs forest camp. And so,
at the end of two and a halt '
hours actual driving time, you i
are left to enjoy in Its pictur
esque setting, beautiful Lake o'
the Woods. "Goddess of Recre
ation of Southern Oregon."
Your return trip may be
made by way of Klamath Falls,
Hyatt lake, Butte Falls, by the
same rouV you arrived, or by
way of Dead Indian Soda
Springs. Each of these routes
are interesting features of Med-
ford's Rogue Wonderland.
Phil Harrif Band
Plays at Oriental
Gardens This Week
What promises to be one of
the biggest dances in southern
Oregon or northern California
in recent years will be held at
Oriental Gardens next Tuesday
night when Phil Harris and
his orchestra appear here.
Dancers are expected to come
from many distant points be
cause Medford is one of three
Oregon cities selected for Har
ris' appearance this season. He
plays July 3 and 4 in Baker
and only one night, July 9,
in Portland at Jantzen Beach.
This will be his first stop north
of Oakland, Cal.
Harris is considered one of
the best and biggest attractions
in the music business today.
Starting a few years ago with
Carol Lofner in San Francisco,
he has steadily and rapidly risen
to fame. He is known from
coast to coast as Jack Benny's
radio pal of the Jello program
He had a very prominent part
in the current picture. "Buck
Benny Rides Again," which re
cently appeared locally. He
returns year after year to the
Wilshire Bowl in Los Angeles
for the winter season. He is
brought to Medford bv Leo
Walker and Millard Hodges,
through arrangements with Mu
sic Corp. of America.
Tickets are now on sale at
the Jackson County Bank build
ing, Main street and Central
avenue. The ticket office will
be open Monday and until
p. m. Tuesday. The box office
at Oriental Gardens will open
at 8 p. m. Tuesday evening to
allow many people to be al
ready in the hall when dancing
starts at 8 o'clock. The public
is advised to come early for
since Harris must leave imme
diately after the dance for
Baker it is probable he will
not play later than 1 o'clock
Ashland. June 29. (Spl.
The bombshell at 10 a. m.
July 4th, which will signal start
of the biggest parade shown in
Ashland for years, will provide
the "kickoff" for a gala three-
day Fourth of July celebration
with dozens of interesting fea
tures for every type of celebrant
in southern Oregon and north
ern California, the final reports
to the general committee re
vealed here last night.
The parade itself, features
scores of floats, several musical
organizations, two national
guard units, kiddies, pets, comi
cal entries, and hundreds of
horses; and will be routed over
a new course which will allow
eight more city blocks of spec
tator space.
The Ashland city band, in
brand-new uniforms, the famed
Commander's Kiltie band of the
American Legion, and the Yreka
Drum and Bugle corps, will
provide stirring rhythms for the
line of march and other events.
Rodeo On Fourth
Starting at 1 p. m. on the
Fourth the annual Independence
day rodeo will be presented
with an even greater array of
wild stock, rides and features
than that which played to an
overflow throng in 1939.
During the evening, wrestling
fans will have the opportunity
of viewing one of the greatest
wrestling cards ever staged on
i the coast. Promoter Mack Lll
lard announced that the feature
event will be a seven-man battle
royal, with two referees in the
i ring, besides Dangerous Danny
McShain, former lightweight
champion of the world. Others
on the card are Cowboy Dude
Chick, Sgt. Bob Kenaston. Bull
dog Jackson, Ernie Piluso, Pete
Belcastro and Prince Mchalikis.
The wrestling bouts will be pre
sented at 8 p. m. in the Eliza
bethan theatre in Lithia park.
Cavalcade a Feature ,
Also the night of July 4th
will mark the premiere perform
ance of "Cavalcade of the Sis
kiyou," historic pageant with
hundreds of performers bringing
to life again the roaring adven
turous pioneer days of southern
Oregon and northern California.
Staged against a mammoth
scenic background, with special
lighting effects, gorgeous cos
tumes, horses, buggies and cov
ered wagons, the cavalcade will
depict many thrilling episodes
including Indian wars, the dis
covery of Crater lake, the found
ing of the first village and other
highlights of historical interest.
Playing Thursday, Friday and
Saturday evenings, "Cavalcade
of the Siskiyou" is one of the
celebration feature attractions
and brings to southern Oregon
and Ashland one of the greatest
civic undertakings.
Another novel attraction of
the celebration Is Ashland's
newest drill team, 'The Ashland
Trail Riders," featuring three
dozen uniformed and equestrian
artists.
Carnival Attraction
All during the week of the
Fourth, a complete carnival,
with rides, side shows and con
cessions, will hold forth in the
center of the business district.
Every day, and all the time,
beautiful Lithia park will be
the site of picnics and gather
ings where Ashland's guests will
be welcome.
The Queen of the Cavalcade
and her beautiful court of nine
popular Ashland girls, chosen
by public vote, and Queen Eliza
beth of the Oregon Shakes
pearean festival, with her court,
will have prominent parts in
the entire celebration.
Children will be feted Satur
day, July 6th, when the annual
Soap Box derby, using cars
built according to national rules,
will be run down a paved street
on one of the city's hills, and
Lithia park will be the scene '
of many amusing kiddies con
tests. Valuable awards will be
offered to participants.
Golf Tourney I
On Frida; July 5th, a golf
tournament at the Ashland i
nine-hole municipal course will 1
beckon players of all degrees
of skill.
Traditional color and beauty
will be provided by a magnifi
cent display of aerial fireworks.
All male inhabitants of Ash
land are required to wear 10
gallon cowboy hats prior to and
during the holidays, under pun
ishment of "kangaroo court"
and "Jail."
Mrs. Borah Hopeful
New York, June 29
Mrs. William E. Borah, widow
of the late senator from Idaho,
said today "the ticket nominated
by the Republican convention
is just such a one as Senator
Borah would have endorsed
heartily. I believe Willkie and
McNary are going to win," she
jaid.
