for president of the United
States, said George M. Roberts
and C. T. Steward who were
classmates with him at the Uni
versity of Indiana in Blooming
ton, Ind.
Mr. Steward and the Republi
can presidential nominee, en
tered college as freshmen in
1909 and sat next to each other
in a history class. "Willkie first
came to school in a grey coat
and brown trousers, later he
wore turtle neck sweaters and
never seemed to care much
about dressing up", Mr. Stew
ard recalled today. "If you met
him just once, you would never
forget him," the local man said.
Mr. Steward recalled that
when Mr. Willkie first started
to college at the age of IS, he
was bashful and was never one
to push himself forward al
though he later gained enough
confidence and individual ideas
I to become the leader of a non

membered Mr. Willkie's appeal
ing and honest eyes.
Mr. Willkie was known In col
lege as Lewis and it was not un
til he graduated that he changed
to Wendell. There were three
brothers, Robert, Herman and
"Lewis" all in college at the
same time and they were known
as the "Willkie brothers". None
of them ever had much money
and therefore did not Join cam
pus clubs or enter much into
college activities.
Mr. Roberts recalled that later
on in school. Mr. Willkie be
came affiliated with Beta Theta
Pi fraternity at the same time
that Paul V. McNutt was in the
house. He said the man in col
lege had a keen mind, who,
when he reached an opinion
voiced it when the opportunity
arose. The Medford lawyer said
that Willkie was graduated from
the liberal arts and law schools,
that he was popular and pos
sessed the same qualities of
wholesomeness and honesty
which appeal to the voting pub
lic today.

JOHN M. BAKER, 59 j
HAILED TO COURT
FOR POINTING GUN
John M. Baker, 59, of 331
Kennett street pleaded guilty In
justice of the peace court this
morning to a charge of pointing
firearm at another, and pas
sing of sentence was postponed
by Judge William R. Coleman
to 3 o'clock this afternoon. The
complaint against Baker was
signed by Mrs. Rose Huff of 329
Kennett street.
Baker was arrested by city po
lice at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, after
he had gone to the home of his
neighbor, William H. Huff, and
allegedly threatened him and
Mrs. Huff with a 22-calibre load
ed revolver. Police said that
Baker walked Into the Huff res
idence and,' at the point of the
gun, demanded to know where
Mrs. Baker had gone.
The Baker's, police stated, ap
parently had had a fight, as the
Baker home was littered with
broken vases and overturned
furniture.
Baker first accosted Mr. Huff
outside, police said, then left
him and walked into the Huff
residence and covered Mrs. Huff
with the revolver. In the mean
time Mr. Huff went to tele
phone and called police.
Police stated that Baker was
taken into custody without
trouble.
