Nary, the ion of pioneers, to
the Republican national conven
tion today as a candidate for
United States president.
The veteran state minority
leader, whose Republican vote
in the Oregon primary election
exceeded the combined Demo
cratic total for President Roose
velt and Vice President Gar
ner, was nominated by William
A. Ekwall of Portland, former
congressman and one-time cir
cuit Judge in Multnomah
county.
"If you want a man who can
unquestionably win in Novem
ber and who, measured from
every conceivable standpoint,
has the stature, the bearing and
the ability to become a great
president of this nation during
probably the most trying time
in our history, then the state
of Oregon offers you her most
distinguished native son," said
Ekwall.
Long Carter Cited
Ekwall, recounting the sen
ator's long career in Oregon
and national politics and his
life-long attachment to the soil,
asserted McNary was "superbly
fitted" for the presidency by ex
perience, leadership, health,
background. Judgment and un
derstanding. "Senator McNary has been
the leader of the Republican
minority and has been recog
nized as shrewd, resourceful
and a splendid strategist," the
Judge said. "He has consistently
championed the cause of the
under-privileged; sometimes his
actions have not been popular
with the so-called 'old guard'
which once sought to dominate
the Republican party but even
though they sometimes disa
greed with him they alwaya re
spected him for his sincerity
jnd forthright opinions."
The former congressman,
meirber of Oregon's 10-man del
egation, dipped into McNary'sj
senate record on wide phases
of national affairs: !
Trlend of Labor
Labor: "Senator McNary has
been a friend of labor before
and during hit tenure in the
senate and as a consequence he
has their respect and affection
. . . He has not advocated un
reasonable labor legislation but
has recognized the fact that
when the laboring man and wo
man are properly protected it
invariably Inures to the benefit
of the country as a whole."
Farm: "He Is the pioneer of
farm legislation in the senate.
There probably is not a farmer
in the United States who does
not know of Senator McNary's
efforts to aid them with the
McNary-Haugen bill which he
succeeded in having passed by
congress on two occasions but
unfortunately on each occasion
the bill was vetoed. ... No
other man can be selected by
this convention who can attract
the votes of the farming dis
tricts as can Senator McNary."
Politics: "It is generally con
ceded that his wise counsel had
much to do with the defeat of
the so-called supreme court bill
several years ago. He knew that
by reason of the small number
of Republicans in the United
States senate, if the fight on
this nefarious bill were made
a partisan issue, it would cer
tainly pass, and it was his plan
that the Republicans hold their
fire and allow the Democratic
members who were opposed to
the bill to make the fight."
Business: "He believes that
legitimate business should not
be harassed and bedeviled by
unreasonable legislation. Sen
ator McNary has fought bitter
ly against the growing accumu
lation of concentrated power in
the executive branch and he
believes business should not be
bound by unjust and unfair
legislative shackles."
Defense: "He believes we
should adequately and quickly
prepare to defend ourselves
against aggression from every
direction, but that under no cir
cumstances should the youth of
our country ever again be sint
to battle and to die on foreign
soil."
