Mr: Pruitt To
Desert Stage
For Directorship
When Ashland's sixth annual
Shakespearean Festival opens in
I August this year, one of Med-
ford's most colorful and talented
actresses will be missing from
the casts. Dorothy Pruitt, a
member of the festival acting
group since 1934 has stepped out
of a speaking role and is hand
ling the Job of assistant direc
torship. Little glory and plenty of
grief is the reward for those en
gaged in "behind-the-scenes" ac
tivity of a modern stage play.
Much more so this year as
Shakespeare is being stream
lined and modernized and pro
duction heads are striving for
a more sprightly tempo with
out obliterating the essence of
his original quality.
Mr j. Pruitt has been given
the task of re-writing and re
vising the comedy "Much Ado
About Nothing" and drama lov
ers who have seen pre-vuea pf
the new script are lauding the
results. The play itself has tak
en on the appearance of a mod
ern musical comedy, complete
with original music, dance se
quences and singing. The ori
ginal quality however, is still
thoroughly Shakespeare and
production heads believe the re
vision will bring more response
than the primary script.
A veteran Shakespearean ac
tress. Mrs. Pruitt will be re
membered for her work in
"Twelfth Night" as "Olivia";
"Ophelia", in "Hamlet"; and
"Biancha" in 'The Taming of
the Shrew."
She has also been seen as
Alice, In "You Can't Take It
With You", presented by com
munity players at the Southern
Oregon College of Education;
"Annie" in "Farewell Supper
and "Janet Leeson in "Without
Romance".
