ENCHANTMENT OF
BLOOMS PROLONGS
SPRINGTIME HERE
Woodruff Meadows And
Abbott Butte Lookout
Are Scenic Highlights.!
Br Karl Janouch.
Thii 1 the most invigorat
ing season of the year. As
plant life burst into bloom,
mankind seems to take new
lease on life and happiness
prevails. This happiness is en
hanced by the beautiful display
of color, beauty and luxury of
plant life. Medford's Rogue
Wonderland affords many areis
throughout the summer season
. where "springtime" is arrested
. ,'nd detained; where its enchant
'"rnent la prolonged for your en
joyment. This, trip' Im named "The Trip
1 1
of WUdilowwi." You will see
many flowers that have passed
through their blooming stage in
the valley.
Leaving Medford via the Cra
ter Lake highway you enter the
Rogue River national forest at
46.8 miles from Medford and
travel 4.7 miles along a boule
vard of stately trees of sugar
pine, white and Douglas fir.
The highway at this part Is
very straight and as you roll
along you feel as if you were
on parade, with the trees acting
as sentinels on either side. This
Is one of the most beautiful
drives on the Pacific coast.
After traveling 1.3 miles fur
ther, or 8 miles from the forest
boundary you reach the Mam
moth Sugar Pine Tree, the larg
est in the state of Oregon. You
can only appreciate its size by
stopping, notice the sign on the
highway which directs you to a
trail leading to the tree, and
then follow this trail and. be
hold the monarch, supreme In
its own class.
At 52.8 you leave the Crater
Lake highway and turn left on
the Woodruff Meadows road.
You Immediately pass through a
large burn consisting of an area
of snags which stand as tomb
stones erected on the grave of
a very beautiful stand of tim
ber. This fire was set by en
emies of the United States dur
ing the World war period and
was finally extinguished by
tome 300 soldiers sent in from
the army post located at Van
couver, Wash.
As you wind along the road
you enter a heavily timbered
area and its cool, refreshing air
causes you to have Immediate
relief. This timber stand is
made up of large and tall Doug
las fir, ponderosa, white and
sugar pine, with an undergrowth
of reproduction of Oregon
grape, fern, service berries, dog
wood, mountain maple, haxel
nut and chinquapin.
At 54.6 miles you reach the

Woodruff Bridg? forest camp.
This camp extends on both sides
of the road and is very popular
with week-end visitors. Many
of our guests from California
spend several days in this Invig
orating area as a means of es
cape from the hot weather of
sunny California. Some of our
visitors from California have
camped at this place for 19 con
secutive years.
Leaving the forest camp, you
cross the Woodruff bridge over
Rogue river and are struck by
the beauty of this stream. You
pause on the bridge and view
the stream in both, directions.
Immediately at the base of the
bridge and on your right is a
beautiful waterfall and to the
left of the bridge is a gorge
which holds your attention for
several moments. Fishing can
also be enjoyed and what sport
could be had if you could but
take time to camp here a week
or so. But you must continue
your trip and wind in and out
among the tall trees of this
virgin foreet. Your attention If
held by the ever-changing sur
vey of green caused by the shad
ows casting soft reflections here
and there.
After traveling three miles
from the highway turnoff, you
will note that the selective cut
ting of white pine and sugar
pine in this vicinity Is being
harvested under the light selec
tive cutting methods of the for
est service. You should also
notice that this type of cutting
does not disturb the natural ap
pearance of the forest to any
degree. It also leaves a good
volume of young trees for fu
ture harvesting, only the ma
ture timber has been removed
This method of cutting is gen
erally known as selective cut
ting under forest service sus
tained yield plans. The young
growth for future needs is left
The greatest care must be exer
cised by forest users to not
leave burning material, such as
cigarettes or matches and camp
fires, which should be put out
with water if available.
At 56.6 miles you reach Wood
ruff Meadows where pure en
joyment is offered by the abund
ance of wild flowers, some of
which are buttercups, white and
golden yarrow, mustard, Hom

flowers as a remembrance of
this delightful scene. However,
it Is useless to pick the flowers
if you do not have some way to
preserve their freshness and
beauty until you get them home.
Continulngy our trip, at S7.1
miles, you reach the junction
of a road and a sign directs
you to the right to Abbott Butte
Lookout.
When you reach the 63.3
mile point, you take the road
to the right to Abbott Butte,
where you command a pano
ramic view of the surrounding
region. While traveling along
this road, you will notice a
valley to your left which Is
filled with all species of wild-
flowers.
At 65.0 miles you come to a
spot which in fancy you may
term a "rock garden, because
of the presence of many flow
ers of such brilliant hues, truly
a spectacular sight. Among the
rocks in this veritable garden,
you will find Indian paintbrush.
red bells, desert asters, Cali
fornia buttercups, purple sage,
blue gilia, flax, gold fields and
birdsfoot treefoil. From here
the view to the south can be
enjoyed. However, more of this
view will be seen from Abbott
Butte, and so, drive on.
At 66.7 miles you reach Ab
bott Butte Lookout with an ele
vation of 6,140 feet. The forest
lookout cordially greets you.
He will loan you his field
glasses and point out the inter
esting features in the cyclorama
before you. Directly to the
south and at the head of a val
ley, stands Mt. McLoughlin, in
stately splendor. Casting your
eyes over the horizon to the
left you see Graylock moun
tain and Mt. Carmine, located
in the the primitive area neat
Lake o" Woods. Further to the
left is Pelican Butte, Mt. Luth
er. Devil's Peak, Ruth, Ethel
and Maude, Goose Eggs, Goose
Nest, Union Peak and the rim
of Crater lake with Mt. Scott
in the background, framed by
Sentinel Rock, the Watchman
Hillman Peak and Lloa Rock.
Leaving the rim of Crater lake
and following to the left with
your eyes, you see the summit
of Mt. Thleison with Its sharp.

As you cast your eyes around
and down to th left, you see
Coyote Point on which the for
est service has stationed a look
out. Looking -down over the
basin of the South Umpqua
river you note the rambling
hills and rugged terrain. The
timbered slopes hold your at
tention for many, many mo
ments. You follow the view
to the left and see the South
Umpqua drainage and finally
back to Mt. McLoughlin. You
stand at a point where you
can look more than 100 miles
to the north and west. You
note that the timbered slopes
are dotted with green meadows
as If green rugs had been plac
ed there. On the slopes near
the lookout are many bright-
colored flowers growing in pro
fusion. What a botanical gar
den, a romantic setting! You
are reminded of this stanza of
well-known verse:
"How fine the air, Immense
the view!
The trees are large and green
See! Here are glades and
crystaal rills.
And every scent and petal
fills
Our souls with pur ecstatic
thrills."
On, your descent you travel
slower because your attention
is attracted by heavily-timbered
fleeting glimpses of blue sky
through the trees which at first
look like water cr a lake.
At 68.3 miles you stop at
what was above mentioned as
the "rock garden" and pick
some of the flowers. Some of
them you cannot identify, so
you take them home, anticipat
ing the fun you will have try
ing to ascertain their Identity.
The flowers here on the north
slope are deeper In color than
anywhere, in the forest. Look
at the bright ruby paintbrush:
what colorl Your poet friends
could write an appealing song
about the flowers in this spot.
When you reach 70.1 milts.
you come to the junction of the
Elk Creek-Butler Creek road
and you take the Elk Creek
road which turns to the left.
The signs direct you. You are
now passing through a forest
of stately hemlock trees.
After driving .9 mile from
the junction, you will come to
what is known as Big Bear
camp, where a camping or pic
nicking spot can he found along
the little stream the road crosses
at this place. No fires can be
built without campfire permits.
A permit can be secured be
fore leaving on the trip or can
be issued by the lookout at
Abbott Butte. This is one of
the few stream camping spoU
in tnis area.
Down the road 1.7 miles you
leave the Rogue River national
forest and pass on through the
Elk Creek valley to the Crater-
Lake highway and on to Med
ford. The drive down Elk creek
takes you across a valley thick
ly populated with stockmen and
diversified ranchers.
