The British announced offici
ally that seven of the invading
aircraft were ahot down by Bri
tish lighten and anti-aircraft
batteries which were in action
all the way from the teeming
Thame Estuary to the York
shire coast.
"No severe damage was done
to any military objective" by
the Germans, it was announced.
The British expeditionary
force has now been withdrawn
from France, London reported,
and will devote itself to the
"one task" of home defense.
About 1,230,000 soldiers are un
der arms to guard against the
imminently-expected Nazi in
vasion. Nazi columns, Berlin reports
said had thrust a spearhead to
ward Lyon, almost directly op
posite the Italian-Swiss border,
affording a nearby junction for
Italian and German armies.

Berlin asserted that half of
France is now in German hands,
with the Invading armies rapid

Pope Pius XII appealed to

A light general rain over Ore
gon this morning was bene

effect on the weather. The
temperature early this afternoon
stood at 74 degrees as against
88 at the same hour yesterday.
Maximum yesterday was 93.
Forecast was for partly
cloudy and ' somewhat cooler
weather tonight, fair tomorrow.

JAILED ON CHARGE OF
KIDNAPING WAITRESS
Arrested under the so-called
Lindbergh kidnap law, Chris
Evigelenos, 44, of Eureka, Cal.,
was held under $10,000 bail by
U. S. Commissioner Victor A.
Tengwald this noon on a charge
of kidnaping Dolly McGinnis.
23, Portland waitress who was
reportedly employed once In a
Irinidad. Cal., restaurant owned
by Evigelenos.
The woman and John H.
Stewart, 34. of Trinidad were
held as material witnesses un
der $2,000 bail each. All three
were placed in Jackson county
jail under custody of Paul Han
lin, U. S. deputy marshal. The
complaint against Evigelenos
was signed by Willis F. Wood,
FBI agent.
Evigelenos, who owns a res
taurant in Eureka, waived a
preliminary hearing before
Commissioner Tengwald. The
complaint charged that he kid
nsped the McGinnis woman al
Grants Pass June IS and trans
ported or caused her to be trans
ported Into California "for the
purpose of reward, ransom or'
otherwise. According to the
rtory told authorities in Grants
Pass by the woman, Stewart's
car was used. She was quoted
by Sheriff A. Donley Barnes in

woods highway just across the
California line.
