lsh troops rushing to support
their beleaguered French allies.
Madrid announced that Span
ish troops have occupied the in
ternational zone of Tangier in
the name of the Sultan of Mo
rocco "to safeguard the indepen
dence and neutrality of the city"
. . . which lies opposite the Brit
ish stronghold of Gibraltar,
guardian rock of the Mediterra
nean. Action Not Clear
It was not immediately appar
ent whether this action heralded
the entrance of Spain into the
fast-widening European conflict
Hitler's legions began march
ing into Paris yesterday after
noon. It was the first time since Bis
marck's troops took Paris in
1071 that Germany's goose-stepping
warriors have marched
into the beautiful old French
capital.
In France's blackest hour, Bri
tain rushed new reinforcements
of British Tommies behind Paris
to bolster the morale and fight
ing strength of the desperately
driven French.
Weakening French resistance
was indicated in a heavily-censored
dispatch from Tours stat
ing that a new, French defense
line would be taken up anew on
the Loire river, 65 miles south
of Paris, "if the fight goes on."
Censor Busy
Dozens of lines in the dispatch
were censored, but it was evi
dent from the number of im
portant German gains which the
censor permitted to go through
including a major new threat
to the Maginot fine itself that
the Associated Press correspon
dent was trying to tell of even
greater events.
The Nazi high command said
Montmedy, vital northern anch
or on the Mr.ginot line, has been
captured and declared there has
been "complete collapse" of the
French all along the 200-mile
western fropt.
France's high command, how
ever, insisted the French retreat
was being carried out "in the
greatest order."
Adolf Hitler ordered all Ger
many beflagged for three days
and all church bells throughout
the reich to ring for IS minutes
today in celebration of the vic
tory. Drive Deep Wedge
The German high command
reported "complete collapse" 'of
the Weygand line all along the
200-mile western front from the
English Channel to Montmedy,
at the northwest end of the
Maginot line.
Two deep German wedges be
hind the Maginot forts consti
tuting a grave threat to 1.000,
000 men stationed in the great
French fortifications on the
Rhine were driven overnight
to Romilly, 65 miles southeast
of Paris, and to Saint Dizier, 125
miles southeast of the French
capital.
Italy, meanwhile, reported its
first land action, a successful de
fense against a French attack
on Galisia hill, 36 miles north
west of Turin on the Alpine
frontier.
The fascist high command
also claimed the capture of a
number of English officers in
repulsing an attack in Italian
North Africa; defeat of a tank
supported allied attack on the
Egyptian-Libyan frontier, and
successful aerial operations over
southeastern France, Tunisia and
on the Red sea.

UNITED 1 LINES
EQUIPMENT HERE
A completely new set of ra
dio equipment is being installed
by company engineers in the
United Air Lines control room
at Medford municipal airport.
The installation will give the
airline's station here the most
modern equipment used in
ground-to-plane radio communi
cation and control, said Max C.
Henne, Medford manager.
The work is being done by
two of the company's radio en
gineers. William M. McKay and
Cyrus T. Lingo. The two men
are assembling the equipment
at the company's store-room in
the hangar. They travel about
the country by truck and trail
er, the trailer carrying a com
plete portable workshop which
they set up at each United sta
tion where radio replacements
are being made.
It will take about two weeks
to complete the installation.
When the ticket office and
control room have been mod
ernized, the company will place
additional furniture in the re
ception room to make it more
comfortable and attractive, Mr.
Henne related.
