SPRAGUE SAYS PUBLIC
SLOW IN DECIDING ON
PRESIDENTIAL CHOICE

OP) Gov. Charlei A. Sprague
of Oregon expressed the belief
here Thursday the outcome of
the 1940 presidential race Is
likely to be uncertain until two
or three weeks before the No
vember poll.
This, he told Interviewers, Is
true because "you cannot tell
what the public reaction is go
ing to be to the president's in
ternational policies. The public
mind Is not yet clear on the
matter and may not be clear
until two or three weeks before
the election."
He spoke highly of the qual
ities of Senator McNary (R.,
Ore.) as a Republican presiden
tial candidate. Thomas E. Dew
ey, New York district attorney,
he said, also would get strong
support In Oregon It he were
nominated.
En route home from the na
tional conference of governors
at Duluth, Governor Sprague
visited with party leaders here
and In Ogden, Utah.

W) Louis Uhlemann, a ba
ker, placed a big sign across
his show window today. It said.
"I have been accused of fifth
column activities and of being
pro-nazl and many other false
stories have been circulated
bout me.
"I am a loyal American and
believe in everything this coun
try stands for.
"I have placed on deposit
with the Great Neck Trust the
sum of $500 to be paid to the
American Red Cross upon pre
sentation of any evidence what
soever to the contrary."

Frank Gannett, the publisher,
proposed today that congress
donate (300,000,000 worth of
surplus farm products to war
ring European nations to avert
"the worst famine In all his
tory.? Carrying his campaign for
the Republican presidential
nomination to Illinois, Gannett
asserted In a prepared address
that "America can keep mil
lions from starving and from
freezing to death in the romlng
winter."
Portland, June 14. VP) The
state highway commission ap
proved the route for the relo
cation of the Pacific highway
from the Springfield vicinity
through Eugene yesterday.
Cost of the projecet was esti
mated at $898,000.
The reconstruction will estab
lish a four-lane highway and
utilize various city arteries in
Eugene for one-way north and
south bound automobile traffic.
OREGON HAS ONE CAR
FOR EVERY 3 PERSONS

are 882,180 registered motor ve
hicles In Oregon, about one for
every three persons and about
8.91 percent more than at the
same time last year. Secretary
of State Earl Snell said today.

few months ago decided to carve
a model Indian totem pole sim
ilar to one a friend had. Now
he has carved almost two score
of them, and he says his new
found hobby takes "about all
his spare time."
LIBEL SUIT CATCHES

$20,000 libel suit based on an
alleged harbor accident at Port
land, In which two men drown
ed was filed in federal court
today against the Swedish
freighter Ecuador, which has
been lying mysteriously idle at
a dock here since Tuesday
when she was scheduled to
start loading 133 carloads of
potential war cargo for Russia.
The libel suit charges the ves
sel, owned by the Johnson line,
was responsible for the drown
ing of two men In Portland
harbor last May 4.
A guard was placed aboard
the Ecuador to keep her from
sailing. Federal officials said
the action would not prevent
loading operations.
However, the Ecuador's hatch
covers remained closed and the
huge shipment of truck bodies,
dies and precision Instruments
purchased in the east by Am
torg, Russian trading agency,
still stood on railroad siding.
Foursquare Will
Dedicate Church
in Sunday Rites
The Foursquare church will
dedicate their new quarters,
the former Nazarene church
property at Central and Jack
son streets, in services next
Sunday. Rev. Mr. and Mrs. H.
E. Schneidau are pastors. Rev.
Mr. and Mrs. E: G. Skultety,
evangelists from Montana, will
assist In the dedication.
Much progress has been
made by the Foursquare church
which was established here 10
weeks ago. An active summer
program is planned.
John Mills, of Ashland, will
speak at Sunday's evening serv
ice and Mrs. Mills will give
special music on her accordion.
Mr. Mills was formerly in
charge of tha Ashland Four
square church.
Tha public is Invited to the
services.
NAVY LETS CONTRACT
FOR NEW AIR STATION
Washington, June 14. (JP)
The navy awarded a $23,381,000
contract today for the construc
tion of a new naval air station
at Corpus Christi, Texas, to be
used to speed the training of
air pilots.
The new base will be similar
to the existing Pensacola, Fla.,
base and was undertaken as a
part of preparations to more
than triple the present rate of
training airmen.
WPA EMPLOYMENT LIST

WPA enrollment stood at 1,858,
712 on June 3, a reduction of
66.318 from the May 29 total.
Officials said today that this
compared with 2,457,901 on
May 31, 1939.
