'Clouds of Airplanes' Not
Yet Received Officially

President Roosevelt repeated to
day that all possible help was
being extended to the allies and
pointed to Hitler's record In re
sponse to a report that the Ger
man chancellor had said invas
ion of the western hemisphere
was grotesque.
Mr. Roosevelt was told at a
press conference that Hitler had
called the possibility or German
invasion of the Americas "gro
tesque" In an interview with a
newspaperman.
Asked for comment, the chief
executive said he could give
none except to say "that it
brings up recollections.'
He authorized direct quota
tion. Defense Slept
He added tliat his remark
could be enlarged on with dates
and nations, going back over
quite a period of years.
Mr. Roosevelt announced two
additional steps to bolster the
nation s defenses:
The signing of an army ap
propriation bill carrying about
$1,498,000,000 for expansion of
army personnel and fighting
equipment.
The formation of a national
defense research committee
headed by Dr. Vannevar Bush,
head of the Carnegie Institu
tion, and of the national advis
ory committee for aeronautics.
The board, the president said,
will have seven additional mem
bers but their names are not
yet ready for announcement.
The chief executive was
asked whether he believed the
United Slates could "extend Its
material resources to the allies
in sufficient volume and suf
ficient speed to save them."
He did not reply directly,
asserting it would take two
hours to answer the inquiry.
. He said, also, that he had re
ceived no second direct appeal
from Premier Reynaud of
France for "clouds" of airplanes
and further assistance against
tne (Jerman foe.

BALANCE OF SEASON
No permits for burning will
be Issued on Saturdays and Sun
days this year by the state forest
department In Jackson and Jose
pnine counties, patrol headquar
ters here announced today. Nor
will a permit be issued for any
burning that will extend over
Saturday or Sunday, It was stat
ed. With thousands of recreation
1st in the forests over the week
ends and with additional tens of
thousands motoring thru timber
lands, the state forest patrol in
Jackson and Josephine counties
already have their hands full on
Saturdays and Sundays, it was
explained. The restricted use ol
burning permits was decided
upon as a means of affording
greater protection against forest
fires over the week-ends.
The burning referred to In
eludes slashings, rubbish, debris
and stubble. Camp-fires are not
affected by the order, it was
emphasized.

ing the past week held close
to the previous week's Improved
level despite less favorable
weather conditions for the
movement of seasonable mer
chandise. Dun At Bradstrret's
weekly review reported today.
"Compared with a year ago,"
sajd the survey, "retail volume
was estimated 7 to 10 percent
greater.
"As a rule gains were broader
than this in highly industrial
ized areas, particularly those
devoted to heavy goods. For the
fourth consecutive week, the
middle west showed the largest
year-to-year improvement In
the . country, t h estimated
change being between 8 and 18
percent.
