Investigation of Alleged Sub
version Should Be Left
to Authorities, Warning
"Don't Be Alamed! Do not
take the law into your own
handa! Don't talk listen!"
Thia advice to American Le
gionnaire wai contained in a
circular letter received today by
H. J. Melring, commander of the
Medford poat, from William D.
Browne, state chairman of the
Legion's radical activities com
mittee. The letter pertained to
the "fifth column" wave of fear
and rumors that has engulfed
the country.
Alarmists in our midst would
have us, on hearing of some re
ported group or individual act
ing subversively to the best in
terest of our people, take the law
Into our own hands, stated Mr,
Browne's letter, which was at
tested to by State Commander
Nlel R. Allen of Grants Pass
"This we must not do, this we
cannot do, for we, as Legion
naires, are pledged to maintain
law and order. Such direct
action would be Just the thing
the 'fifth column' boys would
have us take, for it would bring
about a condition leading to
civil strife if not to dangerous
riot and bloodshed."
Pointing out that the Amerl
can Legion is not a law enforce
ment body, Mr, Browne con
tinued: "We should at all times
be on the alert for signs that
how the workings of subversive
groups. We should have an ear
to the ground but our work must
go no further than reporting our
Information to our department
headquarters. '
Such information, the letter
indicated, would be investigated
and if a law violation was indi
cated the matter would be turn
ed over to the proper law en
forcement agency.

RVE VESSELS ADDED
TO COASTAL SERVICE
Portland, Ore., June 8. (IP)
The McCormick steamship line
has obtained five Olson line
steamers and the freighter Dor
othy Phillips for its coastal ser
vice. District Agent K. C. Con-
yers said today.
They will replace five vessels
recently sold to the French line
and will enable the company
to maintain a weekly service
from California ports to the Co
lumbia river and Puget Sound.

Expansion of the U. S. Marl- 1

transfer at least 500 civilian
conservation corps enrollees to
the merchant marine by July 1,
according to word received by
district CCC headquarters here
today, which announced that '
13 men will ba taken from thia ;
section.
Under the new program. 128
CCC enrollees will be allowed
to participate in tests through-,
out the ninth corps area. If,
for any reason, other districts i

their quota, additional men may
be received from the local dis
trict, it was stated.
Officers said that the prelim-!
inary tests were comparable to
stiff army and navy entrance I
examinations at the enlisted I
men of the merchant marine
