150 MEET DEATH
Highway Accidents Account
for 80 Total Expected
to Mount Over Holidays

The nation's toll of violent
deaths reached the ISO mark as
motorists crowded the highways
on the second day of the Mem
orial day week-end.
Eighty persons were killed in
highway accidents, 22 were re
ported drowned, 16 took their
own lives, and 32 died from
other violence.
New York and Pennsylvania
led the states in total deaths
with 28. Of Pennsylvania's to
tal. 18 died in automobile acci
dents. California reported 13
deaths. Indiana 13, Ohio 10, and
Wisconsin nine.

his team of mules around his
waist as he plowed and was
killed when the mules ran
way.

At the Indianapolis speedway

ed. But seven died in highway
accidents while en route to the

publican presidential nomina
tion, said today that President
Roosevelt is to be congratulated
over the way he handled the
civilian national defense commission.
Dewey regards as progress in
the right direction Mr. Roose
velt's action in making the com
mission directly responsible to
him and not subordinate to the
new deal cabinet.
Dewey made his statement as
he returned from a southern
campaign tour.

FOR SUNDAY. JUNE 9
Promotor Howard Pruitt an
nounced today plans to stage
another rodeo June 9 on the
land adjoining the Elks picnic
grounds.
The same Brahma bulls and
Mexican steers which were on
hand at the last rodeo will again
be present, Pruitt stated, as
will the same riders, stock,
clowns and trick performers.

1 cup bran
cup flour
13 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
18 cup granulated sugar
X egg
1 cup buttermilk (or sour milk)
S tablespoons fat. melted
1 cup drained berries
Mix ingredient, excepting berries.
Mix lightly, fold in the berries and
half-fill greased muffin pans. Bake
30 mlnutee tn a moderate oven.'
Minute steak
1 pound tender top round of beef
g tablespoons fat (uet preferred)
4 teaspoon aalt
H teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon butter
Select beef cut about 18 Inch
thick. Pound well on both aide.
Hest frying pan. add fat and when
smoking add steak and sear It quick
ly on both sides. Lower th beat
slightly snd cook about four rain
uatee. Spread with other Ingredients
snd serve at once.
Hot Chocolate Pads sauce
3 squares chocolate
1-13 cups granulated sugar
8 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 tesspoon vanilla
H teaspoon salt
Mix chocolate, sugar, milk snd
syrup. Cook slowly and atlr con
stantly until thin creamy mixture
forma. Add the vanilla and salt and
serve warm.

IN BLAZING AUTO
Watertown, Mass., May 31.
(U.R) The body of young girl,
stabbed and burned, was found
today in a blazing automobile
near the arsenal In Watertown,
Mass.
She was Identified as Cath
erine Nauer, 17. - The killing
was said by police to have been
confessed by 23-year-old Frank
Gomez.
Gomez was picked up on the
highway early today by a mot
orist, and la reported to have
told the driver that he wanted
to go to a police station, as he
had killed his sweetheart.

today said that days of wish
ful thinking "of lofty purposes"
must be relegated to the past
as far as foreign policy la con
cerned. Kelly spoke before the Chi
cago executive's club.
He said the process of cast
ing aside many of those fine
theories no doubt would be un
pleasant. But, he declared the
nation at least will not be de
luding itself with an impotent
idealism.
