NEW YARDSTICK '
MIS FID
NEED OF CHILD J
Chart and Graph System Is
.... ...... . 1
Applied tO NUtritlOnal I
Problem Held Simple
Cleveland, O. (U.R) Devel
opment of radically new meth
of for measuring child nutrition
here is believed to have ended
years of search by physicians
for an accurate yardstick of nu
trition. The method, outlined by Dr
Norman C. Wetzel, associate
professor of pediatrici at West
ern Reserve university, Is based
on the direct study of 2,023
Cleveland school children and
records of more than 4,000,001
children during the past 100
years.
The system Involves the use
of a "grid" or chart into which
any child can be fitted.
Preliminary application of the
chart indicated that IS of every
100 local school children either
are inadequately nourished or
are in need of comprehensive
medical examination. The rec
ord was believed comparable to
that existing generally in the
United States.
Easily Applied
Or. Wetzel said that unlike all
previous systems, it has proved
Ijoth accurate and easily applied
He said that it offered an an
swer to the serious problem of
selecting the city's malnourished
children, a problem which
thwarted health officers seeking
to prove the effects of Cleve
land's relief crisis on child
health.
He pointed out that most sys
tems have been either too elabo-
rate for practical use of have
failed to allow for the extent to
which a particular child can de-!
part from average physical
characteristics and still be nour
lsned properly and in good
health.
He said the feature of the sys
tem is the "grid" by which the
child's "nutritional grade" Is
established. It was designed spe
cifically to be applied by such
workers as school nurses, re
quires very little time for each
child, and necessitates only a
minimum amount of calculation
Classifications Set Up
The chart utilizes the child's
height and weight to determine
the physical type with which he
should be classed and then the
child is fitted into the "grid" ac
cording to his physical and nu
tritional state, such as over
nourished, stocky, good, fair,
borderline or poor.
Dr. Wetzel, who hag published
a number of previous papers on
child physical development,
plotted nearly 2,000 children
studied at Harvard university
also and examined all Important
records of the sort in calibrating
the graph.
He pointed out that previous
ly even the Judgment of "the
most experienced examiner"
has been found to "vary con
spicuously" in diagnosing mal
nutrition. World's Fair Bans
