Tuesday's initial meeting.
Mrs. R. J. Earl was elected
active chairman of the local
branch of the National Legion
of Mothers of America at a ses-
sion held Tuesday in the Pres
byterian church parlors to or
ganize and formulate plans for
the association here. Mrs. Fran
cis G. Hughes was named secretary-treasurer.
Mrs. Earl pointed out at the
session that all women interest
ed, whether they are mothers
or not, are invited to partici
pate in the organization. Two
requlren.r.its for membership
are being 21 years of age and
a citizen of the United States.
There are no dues and the or
. ganization is non-partisan and
non-sectarian.
Three-Fold Goal
The Legion of Mothers is
three-fold in purpose: to oppose
conscription of American troops
to fight on foreign soil; to sup
port adequate home defense;
and to oppose any subversive
groups in America. The league
has three million members and
is backed by a majority of
peace promoting organizations
in the United States. Word of
the league has been spread
throughout the country through
contact with key women In every
city. It is the aim of the organi
zation to embrace the world with
its plea for peace.
Next meeting will be held
Friday, May 31, at 2 p. m. at
the Presbyterian church.

group today to prepare a de
tailed list of alleged subversive
acts at Grays Harbor.

SAWMILL NEAR EUGENE
DESTROYED BY BLAZE
Eugene, Ore., May 22. (P)
Fire Wednesday totally destroy
ed a sawmill owned and oper
ated by E. E. Hyland, 12 miles
E-uthwest of here on the Lorane
highway. Loss was estimated by
the owner to be near $12,000.
Cause of the blaze, combatted
for five hours by the Eugene
fire department, was undeter
mined. No insurance was car
ried and there are no plans to
rebuild. About 40 men were
employed.
OREGON GUIDE PRICE
IS SETTLED BY BOARD
Salem, May 23. W) The
Oregon Guide, a WPA book de
scribing the state's historical and
scenic attractions, will be sold
to libraries and schools for $1.73
a copy, the state board of con
trol decided today.
The book, copyrighted by the
board of control, will sell at re
tail for $2.50, while the state
will pay $1.1)0. The books will
be distributed to schools and
libraries by the state library.

Washington (U.R) Naval lrs
sons of the European war will
lead inevitably to modifications
in many aspects of general stra
tegy at sea, experts agree here.
These same lessons also will
be reflected in changes in con
struction. Secretary of the Navy
Charles Edison made the first
pronouncement on this aspect
recently when he declared large
warships would require streng
thening of their superstructure
for protection against large
bombs.
As 'for strategy, the hit-and-run
type which has been
brought to its highest develop
ment in the Scandinavian con
flict,, has emphasized the im
portance of certain classes of
warcraft.
Experts said that the Euro
pean war will have only limited
application to United States
naval strategy because of the
vastly different problems in
volved. The United States fleet
patrols an entire ocean, the Pa
cific, and guards only one en
closed naval area, the Carib
bean. Objectives Stated
The main problem of the U.
S. navy is to prevent any pos
sible enemy from approaching
the continental limits of the na
tion, and to intercept and des
troy its foe, which must ap
proach by sea before it draws
near the mainland.
For this reason Oahu, most
strategic Island of the Hawaiian
group, has been converted into
a fortress, and Pearl Harbor,
3.000 miles out in the Pacific,
has been made into the most
powerful naval base in the en
tire ocean.
But in the comparatively new
defense areas of Alaska and the
Caribbean there are problems
which resemble those encoun
tered In the European war.
. There are narrow sea pas
sages which can be mined, har
brrs which can be stealthily ap
proached, and landings which
can be attempted secretly.
The experiences in Norway,
in the Baltic and in the North
sea offer reference to possible
hostilities in the Caribbean and
in Alaskan waters, experts said.

al and aviation units have fea
tured the European war at sea
thus far, naval observers point
ed out. Submarines, small tor
pedo motorboata, aircraft and
destroyers have carried a major
part of the offensive effort.

legation declared today definite
assurances had been received
that King Haakon, Crown Prince
Olav and their Norwegian min
isters still were in northern
Norway and that the govern
ment had no Intention of leaving
the country.
