Central Point, Gold Hill and
Trail Are Among First
to Announce Readiness
The Jackson county Red
Cross campaign for $2400 as
sumed a broader front today as
committees in some rural areas
swung into action. Central
Point, Gold Hill and Trail were
among the first of county com
munities to announce their
readiness to begin the drive for
war relief funds.
Meantime the executive com
mittee and Its sub-committees
continued their solicitation In
the Medford area. It is the hope
of the campaign director, Ben
E. Harder, that Jackson county
will be one of the first In Ore
gon to complete its quota.

The American Red Cross will
send a million dollars worth
of relief supplies to Europe on
a "mercy ship" which will sail
from Jersey City, New Jersey,
around June 1st.
Chairman Norman H. Davis
said the supplies will supple
ment those which Red Cross
representatives are buying in
France to meet immediate
needs.
The Pacific area headquarters
of the Red Cross announced the
West Coast relief fund now to
tals $123,000. The Red Cross
received a 10-thousand-dollar
contribution from the Los An
geles clearing house.
CAPTURED BY NAZIS
Berlin, May 23. AP via
radio) The Berlin radio quoted
the Italian newspaper, Cazctta
del Popolo, today as reporting
the capture of the French Gen
eral Didelet by Germans in the
neighborhood of Valenciennes,
France.
General Didelet was said to
he a former military attache In
Berlin.
SCALISE JAILED
EN BOND LOST
New York, May 23. W)
George Scalise, former presi
dent of the Building Service
Employes International union
(AFL) who is under Indictment
for extortion, was held in
Tombs prison today awaiting an
opportunity to ask for a reduc
tion In his bail tomorrow.
Scalise, charged with exact
ing money from hotels and oth
er organizations under threat
of labor trouble, had been at
liberty since his indictment sev
eral weeks ago under $40,000
bail. The bond was abruptly
withdrawn yesterday by the
surety company which put It
up.
No explanation of the move
was made.

Hamilton, Bermuda, May 23.
W") British censors removed
22 bags of mail today from the
Pan-American Atlantic clipper,
which was forced back here
from the Azores by high seas
last night on her eastbound
flight from New York.
Six mail bags were destined
for Germany, four for Italy,
four for Portugal, two for
Switzerland and one each for
Denmark, Sweden, Greece,
Spain, Norway and the Azores.
