WILD FLOWERS IN

AN ENJOYABLE ONE
Tour Includes Ski Ground
Popular In Winter
47 Miles Covered.
As the spring season advances
we begin to set the wanderlust
and have a desire to get out in
the deep shade of the forests,
or scale one of the many peaks
that surround the valley, or en
joy a picnic lunch by the side
of a mountain stream where
the air seems to be Just a little
bit cooler and fresher than any
place else.
Medford's Rojme Wonderland
offer many such opportunities,
and a trip to the Anderson Butte
Lookout, thence to the Little
Applegate River Is found to be
a most enjoyable one, combining
several of these attractive fea
tures. Let's take this trip and
see for ourselves what nature
has to offer.
We start south on Highway
S9 from Main and Riverside
streets, and at 4.8 miles turn
right around the Texaco station
in Phoenix. Now on a surfaced
highway, we travel In a south
erly direction to a highway sign
directing us to the Anderson
Creek road. Here we turn right
onto a narrower and unpaved
road. We are travelling through
orchards and farms but are
slightly above the valley floor,
and get a good view of the farm
ing district around Talent and
Ashland.
In a few more minutes we
come to a crossroad, but con
tinue straight ahead toward An
derson Creek as indicated by
the road sign. Seven-tenths of
a mile further on turn sharply
to the right, and we are on the
Anderson Creek road travelling
up the creek and with no chance
of getting off our course by
keeping the main traveled road.
Now we are leaving the man
made farms of the valley and
enter Nature's garden of wild-
flowers and a variety of shrubs,
evergreen, and coniferous trees
bordering the lotidside. Those
interested In wlldflowers will
be pleased with the many var
ieties growing along the road
side, Including: Indian Paint
Brush, Deerweed, Wild Holly
hock. California Holly, Gold
Fields, Lilac. Blazing Star.
Primrose. Wild Hyacinth. But
tercup. Yellow Violet, Blue Lu
pine, California Poppy, Pincush
ion, Madia, Cream Cups, Mon
key Flower, Meadow Foam.
How many jof these can you
find and Identify?
The tall, stately trees that
wtU be seen are the Douglas
and white firs, incense cedars,
and the ponderosa pine. The
streams are bordered with al
der trees and many kinds of
shrubs adding to their beauty
and refreshing atmosphere.
Soon we enter Anderson
Creek canyon and begin to
climb up the mountain as the
road winds In wide curves and
switchbacks to Anderson Gap
at the summit of the divide be
tween Bear Creek and Little
Applegate river. Here It seems
that a new world unfolds as we
reach the top and get our first
real glimpse of the rugged Sis
kiyou mountains. We are anxi
ous to see more of the country,
so we turn to the right and drive
3.9 miles to Anderson Butte!
Lookout Station 5.000 feet above
sea-level and but 18 8 miles
from Medford. We climb the
Lookout Tower which enables
us to get the best possible vlew.i

As we make our first general
survey of the territory that can
be seen from Lookout to horizon
in all directions, we are so
thrilled over the great expanse
of country visible that we are
practically speechless. Note the
great contrast between the
rough mountainous area to the
south which is the Applegate
Ranger District and the fertile
Rogue river valley to the north,
whose farms and orchards of
various sires and shapes have
from this elevation the appear
ance of a crazy quilt pattern.
From here we can look Into
McDonald basin, which Is vis
ited In the winter by groups of
Rogue Snowmen representing
the ski enthusiasts of Medford
and vicinity. This basin has
great possibilities as a winter
playground for southern Oregon
and plans are being laid to op
en up the area and make Is ac
cessible to the many ardent fol
lowers of snow sports in this
locality.
Looking In a northeast direc
tion toward the Cascades we
easily Identify Mt. McLoughlin;
then as we swing further north
we see Mt. Scott and even Llao
Rock on the very rim of Crater
Lake. Still further north, Mt.
Thielsen on the east side and
Mt. Bailey on the west side of
Diamond Lake are visible. As
we turn our gaze to the south
there are numerous prominent
peaks from Mt. Ashland in the
southeast to Greyback Moun
tain in- the southwest.
The lookout man assists us In
identifying the various moun
tain peaks and drainages, and
we learn that- It is an essential
part of his Job to know these
various landmarks In order that
he may properly report the fires
he detects. He also points out
the large, light green patches on
several mountain aides as con
trasted to the dark green of the
timbered areas, which ne ex
plains are brushfields that have
followed fires which occurred
In these mountains at various
times in the past. We know that
the forest fire season Is here
and we know the values lost
when fires burn over these tim
bered slopes, so let's do our part
to help keep fires out. Care
less smokers start a large num-
ber of fires each year so re-
member and do not smoke while
traveling in forested areas. If
y"11 mus smoke, stop In a safe
P'ace. smoke, and carefully put
ollt ,n1 cigarette butt before
leaving.
Aiier we nave sponi our al
lotted time enjoying the panor
amic view from the lookout sta
tion, we begin thinking about a
place to enjoy our picnic lunch.

(A.) Little Applegate Camp
and start down the mountain.
Seven-tenths of a mile from An
derson Gap we cross the old
Sterling ditch, one of the most
Interesting landmarks in this
section. This ditch is twenty-
seven miles long and was con
structed sixty-four years ago at
a cost of $130,000. Chinese labor
was used, the Chinese worker
receiving $.25 per day. Timbers
for the abandoned flume to the
left were floated down the ditch
for miles from the sawmill
which was located at the head
of Glade Fork. This ditch is
still used during winter months
for mining purposes at the Ster
ling Mine.
Four and four-tenths miles
from Anderson Gap we see a
new bridge across the Little
Applegate river which takes us
to the Little Applegate camp
ground. Here the forest service
has recently installed stoves,
tables, and other facilities, and
we find a very pleasant place to
have our lunch in the cool shade
of the forest by this small
stream.
A good rest after lunch and
we are ready to start home. We
take the road down Little Ap
plegate river 11.5 miles to the
Junction with the Big Applegate
road and from here the road is
surfaced to Medford via Ruch.
and Jacksonville, a distance of
18 miles. We are home again
having traveled but 47 miles
with a memory of a delightful
trip and a feeling that we are
ever so much more intimately
acquainted with another part of
Medford's Rogue Wonderland.
George Raft Stars
With Joan Bennett
In Rialto Picture
With George Raft and Joan
Bennett sharing stellar honors
and a strong supporting cast
featuring Walter Pidgeon. Gla
dys George and Lloyd Nolan,
"The House Across the Bay",
heads the double bill program
opening a three day todny at
the New Rialto Theatre. "Alias
the Deacon", featuring Rnli
Burns and Mischa Auer, plays,
as the companion film with "The
House Across the Bay". 1
"The House Across the Bay"
Is the story of Brenda Bentlcy,
a beautiful and alluring woman,
who is left in a hostile world
when her husband is convicted
for income tax evasion Ond sent

and loyalty expected of her by
the man behind bars. Brenda
is exposed to temptations and
to difficulties, but her love for
her husband remains a blind
ing emotion to which she clings
against all odds. However, when
Walter Pidgeon, impersonating
the second romantic lead, comes
into her life, the picture moves
swiftly and dynamically to a
climax that is as punchy as it
is unexpected.
Bob Bun, with his bazooka
and his homely, homespun stor
ies about the kinfolk back yon
der, returns to the screen in
"Alias the Deacon", a new film
from the master of laugh-getters,
which plays as the com
panion feature with "The House
Across the Bay". In contrast to
his more recent roles, Burns is
distinctly himself in "Alias the
Deacon".
Comedy situations are height
ened by the presence of Mischa
Auer. who appears with Burns
for the first time. As the vola
tile barber of an oil boom town,
Auer helps Bums solve the dif
ficulties of some troubled
friends by outwitting a group
of smalltime crooks. Dennis
O'Keefe and Peggy Moran pro
vide the romantic interest, and
O'Keefe pairs with Guinn (Big
Boy) Williams in a ten-round
prizefight that proves the ac
tion highlight of the double
bill. !
Others in the strong support
ing cast include Edward Brophy,
Spencer Charters and Bennie
Bartlctt.
