LEAD IN OREGON
Washington, Jan. 13. (IP)
The commerce department said
today 88.3 per cent of the de
fendants in major criminal
cases in circuit courts of Oregon
in 1938 were convicted.
Pleas of guilty accounted for
disposition of most cases. It
continued, with only 9.3 per
cent being disposed of by trial.
Of 9G2 persons convicted 891
pleaded guilty, courts held four
guilty and juries convicted 6T.
The number was slightly larger
than In the two preceding yean.
In seven murder cases two
defendants pleaded guilty and
five were convicted by Juries.
In 11 manslaughter cases six
pleaded guilty and five were
convicted.
In 159 burglary cases 141
pleaded guilty, two were found
guilty by Julges and 11 con
victed by juries. Of 79 auto
mobile theft defendants 78
pleaded guilty and one was
convicted by a jury. About 298
persons were charged with lar
ceny but 17 cases were disposed
of without trial, 268 pleaded
guilty, one was found guilty by
the court and 10 convicted by
juries.
In the major cases one de
fendant was sentenced to death.
430 to the reformatory or pris
on, 355 were put on probation
or given suspended sentence,
157 were sentenced to local
jails, 14 fined only and five
persons sent to Juvenile Insti
