"Announcement by the California-Oregon
Power company
that the Gold Ray dam will be
rebuilt this year is the first en
couragement for fish and wild
life conservationist in many
years that there is yet a pos
sibility of perpetuating some of
the long lost fame of Rogue
river as a migratory watnr
course for the famous sca-run
steelhead trout," it was stated
today by T. E. Daniels, well
known Medford sportsman.
'Tor many years the present
dam at Gold Ray has been re
sponsible for the destruction of
millions of fish, both steelhead
trout and salmon, in their effort
to ascend and descend the river
at that point," Mr. Daniels ex
plained. Promises Cited
"The announced construction
of the dam, or its rebuilding,"
he pointed out, "reminds the
sportsmen of the power com
pany's oft-repeated promise in
the past that a new fishway
with its outlet below the power
house, in the spillway, would
be built when the dam was re
built. Only at the spillway
where the power house will dis
charge practically the entire
flow of the river at low water
seasons, will there be enough
water to attract the fish ascend
ing the river. For many years
th badly leaking Gold Ray dam
has furnished some water above
the spillway in low water seas
ons to attract fish. With a new
practically water tight dam, the
amount of water the present
fishways will discharge at their
outlets,, even though they be
kept full of water at all times,
will be useless to attract the
ascending fish, which will vain
ly fight their lives away, as they
hove for many past years, below
the power house.
Depression Delay
"Conservationists, sportsmen,
state game commission and
United States Bureau of Fish
eries officials were promised
the new fishway by the power
company year after year, In con
nection with the proposed re
building of the dam. With the
depression the expenditure of
, money for a new dam was said
to be Impossible.
"Falure now to build the new
fish ladder with the new dam
will be the final blow to Rogue
river's future possibilities of be
ing rehabilitated as a sea run
steelhead trout fishing stream.
"Brown and Cox Webb, Zane
Grey, Fred Burnham and hun
dreds of other anfilprs of world
wide reputation, who once sung
the praises of Rogue river steel
head fishing from Australia to
Maine, deserted the stream
years ago," Daniels said.

the opening of the well. The
monument Is administered by
the park administrative staff.
Mr. Doerr said the well water
tasted good but would not be
used generally until it had been
thoroughly analyzed by chem
ists. The well is 756 feet deep.
Digging of the well started about
a year ago as a WPA project.
Difficulty of collapsing walls
was experienced from time to
time.
Water from the well. Mr.
Doerr explained, will serve the
Lava Beds headquarters area.
Previously the water has been
hauled from Shaw's mill, a dis
tance of 12 miles.
YIELDS FIRST DRINK
Water was drunk for the first
time yesterday from the new
well at the Indian Well ranger
station in the Lava Beds national
monument in northern Cal
ifornia, it was disclosed today
by John E. Docrr, Jr., naturalist
of Crater Lake national park
following his return from the
monument.

The house agriculture commit
tee refused at the last regular
session of congress to report the
bill. Leaders of the cost-of-pro-duction
movement have obtain
ed 108 signatures on a petition
to force the bill up before the
house for consideration. They
have decided to start a cam
paign at once for the necessary
110 additional signatures.
Sponsors of the bill in the
senate include Bone (D., Wash.)
and Kolman (R., Ore.); in the
public hearings. The excess over
comestic needs would be sold
in the world market for what
ever it would bring. Tariffs
would keep out competing im
ports. Soil conservation practices,
crop insurance and some other
features of the present farm
program would be retained, but
govern mental limitations on
production would be junked.
Sponsors of the cost-of-pro-duction
plan declare the "Amer
ican farmer is entitled to the
American market at a profit,"
and they say this would give it
to him.

tain. A boulder crushed Fountain

who crossed the river by boat

answer, Dr. S. B. Osgood and
Coroner Virgil Hull, the latter
driving an ambulance, rushed
out at 11:30 last night. Forest
service men also left the Red
wood ranger station at Cava
Junction.
Meanwhile Volght returned
across to the Injured man.
Heavy rains fell and the river
rose a foot an hour. None of
the later-arrived rescuers could
cross the precipitous walls and
the torrent.
