Joe Penner is Back on me
screen, after a year's absence,
and this time the funny fellow
is playing around with bookies,
taxi-drivers, a racing nag with
peculiar habits and blondely,
lovely Betty Grable in "The
Day The Bookies Wept," which
heads the double bill opening
a three day run today at the
New Rialto theatre. Others in
the large cast include Thurston
Hall, Tom Kennedy and Carol

"The Housekeeper's
Daughter" Pleases
Craterian Audiences
One of the gayest and most
exciting motion pictures to
reach the screen within recent
months was unreeled last night
at the Craterian theatre under
the title of "The Housekeeper's
Daughter." With a capitally
chosen cast headed by Joan
Bennett, Adolphe Menjou, Peg
gy Wood, John Hubbard, Don
ald Meek, William Gargan and
Lilian Bond, the new film is
a fast-moving, lively romance,
smartly fashioned to contain all
the elements of entertainment.
Miss Bennett, portraying the
alluring housekeepers daugh
ter, leaves her underworld boy
friend flat to return to her
mother, who works for the soc
ially prominent Randall family,
Learning that the family has
left town for the summer, the
heroine is pleasantly surprised
to discover that the young and
handsome scion of the family,
played by John Hubbard, one
of the screen's new leading
men, has decided to stay in
town and brave the summer
heat. Young Randall is deter
mined to break into newspaper
work and he accomplishes this
feat very easily by using his
father's Influence.
Aided and abetted by the
housekeepers' daughter, he at
taches himself to a murder mys
tery and from then on the new
film proceeds at a terrific pace,
introducing merry mix-ups and
unexpected complications. High
comedy is blended with rich ro
mantic interludes, and the gay
est scenes of the film revolve
around a gang of underworld
hoodlums who are scared off by
a fireworks celebration.
