to thousands of movie-goers as
the Hardy Family of the screen
keep growing more and more
popular with each new picture.
Starting today at the Crate
rian theater, the latest of the
Hardy pictures reaches Medford
as a special attraction for the
Christmas holidays. It's called
"Judge Hardy and Son," and
itars Mickey Rooney as Andy,
Lewis Stone as the Judge. Fay

as Aunt Milly and Ann Ruther
ford as Andy s girl friend, Polly
Benedict.
"Judge Hardy and Son" sees
Mickey turning detective when
his father interests himself in a
foreclosure case of a lovable old
couple, and a missing relative
must be found. Mickey's sleuth
ing gets htm into contact with
three pretty girls and resulting
complications with girl friend
Ann Rutherford. Hilarious trials
and tribulations for Andy Hardy
follow.
He turns hero, too, to pilot
a small speedboat over a raging,
flooded river to bring Cecelia
Parker to the bedside of Mother
Hardy, whose illness threatens
to be fatal. And in a man-toman
talk Mickey turns the
tables and lectures his father

when the hour seems darkest
before the sick wife and mother
passes the crisis of her illness.
The entire action of the film
takes place in the charming
home town of Carvel. The "fam
ily" is augmented by June Preis

who give Andy a run for his

New Charlie Chan Film Comincr

est adventures of Charlie Chan,
the famous Oriental detective,
in "Charlie Chan In the City in
Darkness," which comes to the
New Rialto theater for Tuesday
and Wednesday, as the com

New York." starring popular
Jackie Cooper. In this thrill

Gordon.
Cooper is said to have his
best role to date as the boy

Come -Back Role
Seeing the Dead End Kids
play heroic roles instead of city
toughs is going to be the Christ
mas revelation offered New Ri
alto theater patrons when "The
Dead End Kids on Dress Pa
rade" opens for today and to
morrow only at the popular
Main street playhouse.
It Is a complete reversal of
form, the wise-cracking, long
haired, gutter-hardened denizens by
of the slums will become model
American youths, though still
with plenty of hooliganism, at
one of the country's leading
military academies. There will
be one exception, however. Leo
Gorcey, toughest of the lot, the
lad who could spit through the
eye of a needle, is still a tough.
The story is concerned with a
tough city lad who is sent to a
military academy to learn the
finer side of youth. Here he
engages the other Dead End
Kids Billy Halop, Bobby Jor
dan, Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell
and Bernard Punsley all model
(very mode!) cadets. Too city
wise to go for a lot of discip
line and drills, Gorcey gets Into
plenty of scrapes and nearly
gets tossed out of school, but
for the good fellowship of the
cadet-major, played by Halop.
How Gorcey turns from him
self to an understanding young
cadet forms the basis of the
climax of the "Dead End Kils
on Dress Parade."
Others in the cast Include
John Litel, Frankie Thomas
and Cissie Loftus.
The sort of family which
lives on "Maple avenue" in any
average small town in the Unit
ed States, owns its home or is
struggling to do so. Is headed
a tolerant husband and
father and a very wise and
sweet mother, who are the
proud parents of four or five
youngsters is brought to the
screen in "Our Neighbors, the
Carters," which plays as the
second feature on the New Ri
alto's holiday double bill. Fay
Bainter, Frank Craven, Edmund
Lowe and Genevieve Tobin
head the cast of the smart and
hilarious supporting comedy.

FIREMEN FETED
AT YULE FEAST
A Christmas turkey dinner
was given for all the men of
the fire department at fire head
quarters yesterday with Chief
Roy Elliott as host.
The dinner, the chief said,
was in appreciation of the work
the firemen did in rebuilding
and repainting discarded toys
for distribution among needy
children. For weeks, Mr. Elliott
related, the men worked night
and day on the toys, giving
their time and talent gratis.
The materials used in the toy
rebuilding are bought with
funds raised each year by the
firemen's ball.
In appreciation of his leader
ship during the past year, the
men presented Chief Elliott
with a combination hunting
knife and hatchet encased in a
leather sheath. The presenta
tion was made by Edward
Canoose, assistant chief.
