OF ADMIRAL SPEE
U. S. Took Leading Role in
Firm Stand is Revelation
Other Nations Joined.
Montevideo, Dec. 20. (IP)
Diplomatic sources of high au
thority disclosed today the
United States, Argentina and
Brazil had offered armed aid
to Uruguay for ejection of the
German pocket battleship Ad
miral Graf Spee.
The informant stated that In
the last tense hours before the
German raider acceded to Uru
guay's departure order Sunday,
the United States assumed a
leading role in the firm stand
taken by representatives of the
Washington, Buenos Aires and
Rio De Janeiro governments in
a meeting here.
Agreed in Conference.
The Admiral Graf Spee final
ly sailed out of Monevideo and
was exploded by its command
er, Capt. Hans Langsdorff,
rather than again face the Brit
ish warships it had battled last
Wednesday.
It was explained that force,
had its use been necessary,
would have involved the Amer
ican nations concerned in put
ting teeth into the neutrality
declaration of the Panama con
ference, which on October 3
warned belligerents away from
the coasts in a wide belt reach
ing from Maine to Cane Horn
and back up to Alaska.
Meanwhile, the British gov
ernment asked the Uruguayan
foreign ministry to investigate
whether British warships used
gas shells in attacking the Ad
miral Graf Spee last Wednes
day, as reported by sailors on
the pocket battleship to Otto
Langmann, German minister to
Uruguay.
Claim Eyes Injured.
The sailors said they had suf
fered sight impairment as a re
sult.
(In London, Prime Minister
Chamberlain and the admiralty
last Thursday denied Nazi
charges that British cruisers had
used gas shells in the battle.)
I he Uruguayan chamber nf
deputies expected to hear today
from Foreign Minister Alberto
Guani an explanation of the
German protest in regard to the
Admiral Graf Spee case.
Deputies of different parties1
criticized or praised Guant for
his handling of the matter, In
which Uruguay ordered the
ship interned, if it overstayed a
72-hour deadline.

Seattle, Dec. 20. CP) Labor,
which has already done its bit
to aid the Washington state ap
ple market, dealt a sharp blow
by the war in Europe, now is
offering its helping hand to the
egg and pork producers.
An intensive drive to increase
consumption of both commodi
ties in the northwest was
launched today through the
btate Federation of Butchers.
The "eat more eggs" and "eat
more pork" campaigns will be
carried on in Washington and
Oregon and are expected to
have the powerful backing of
organized labor in both states,
Joe S. Hoffmann, business agent
of the Meat Cutters Union, lo
cal 81, said.
MINES STEP OP
Spruce Pine, N. C. (U.R)
Hundreds of steel-helmeted men
are working day and night in
the 300-odd mica mines in the
mountains of North Carolina.
With the outbreak of war in
Europe, mica prices shot up
ward, hundreds of additional
miners were hired and mine
owners demanded that work be
carried out as rapidly as possible.
Without mica, war cannot go
on. To have airplanes, motor
trucks, tanks or any equipment
involving motors or electricity,
there must be mica the best
Insulating material and the only
really satisfactory one ever discovered.

these days of stream-lined in

of Maryville, has discovered a
line in an old record book that
has a lot of hidden blisters in
it. It tells of a record Companies

from San Ynacio to Laredo.

"Mexican incident," a distance
of 45 miles in 15 hours. It broke
all marching records of United
States troops.
FIRST METHODIST
DEBT IS REDUCED
"Members of the First Metho
dist church are rejoicing this
week in that they have Just paid
off another $1000 of their in
debtedness," a church spokes
man revealed today. "Slowly,
but steadily, the debt has been
reduced until it Is no longer a
menace to the welfare and pro
gress of the church," he said.
Next Sunday morning the
church will conduct its annual
Christmas Gift March, when, in
stead of the passing the collec
tion plates, the audience will
rise and, led by the pastor and
choir, file past the altar and
place thereon a special contri

the church.
Sunday at 8 p.m. the choir
will present the cantata, "His
Natal Day" by Norman, to
which all are invited.
