Fire At Spot Fire last night
In the attic of The Spot, 17
South Riverside avenue, was
put out by the fire department's
chemical crew before any dam
age was done. Sparks emanat
ing from a hole in a stove-pipe
in the attic ignited a pile of
gunny sacks, Fire Chief Roy El
liott reported. Rust had worn
the hole in the stove-pipe, the
chief said. The alarm was
sounded at 7:47 p. m. Chief El
liott happened to be next door
and was able to direct suppres
sion of the blaze immediately.

Toy Gifts Kiwanians were
reminded yesterday to bring
toys to the weekly luncheon
meeting in the Hotel Medford
tomorrow noon. The toys, not
to cost in excess of 25 cents
each, will be exchanged among
the members in accordance with
the club's Christmas tradition
and after the meeting will be
given to Kiwanian E. H. Hed
rick, superintendent of city
schools, for presentation to un
derprivileged school children.
Skiing Poor Rain and snow
combined yesterday to make
skiing conditions in Crater Lake
national park poor. The ski
trails, rangers reported by radio
late yesterday afternoon, would
not be opened today. About an
inch of new snow was measured
in the park yesterday, the
ground cover being 23 inches
deep at headquarters at 4 p. m.
It rained and snowed most of
the day. At 4 p. m. it was rain
ing at Annie Spring and snow
ing at the lake rim, there being
a 1000-foot difference in eleva
tion between the two points.
Roads in the park were passable
but slushy and use of tire chains
was advised. The weather at 4
p. m. was cloudy and visibility
was zero. Temperatures ranged
yesterday from a high of 34 de
grees to a low of 31.

Minor Accidents There were
two auto accidents at Fourth
and Fir streets yesterday, city
police reports stated. In the
morning, vehicles driven by R.
O. Sims of 41 Ross court and
Xavier Widmer of Route 4 col
lided with considerable damage
to both machines. In the after
noon cars operated by Bufford
Ward of Route 1 and Richard
Dale of 105 South Grape street
collided with minor damage.
In Jail Held in Jackson
county jail yesterday were Fred
Burns. 56, Anton Olson, 44, and
Paul H. Vath, 44, all of Kla
math Falls and all charged with
selling liquor to Indians. They
were arrested in Klamath Falls
and brought to the county jail
here Friday night by Paul Han
lin, U. S. deputy marshal, after
they had been arraigned before
U. S. Commissioner Bert
Thomas. Olson, it was charged,
was a second offender so far as
selling liquor to Indians was
concerned and his case will be
presented to the grand jury. The
others were listed as first of
fenders and they will therefore
be arraigned in U. S. district
court on informations.

Helsinki Claims Loss of
'Hundreds' And Many
Russian Tanks Captured.
Hensinkl, Dec. 16. (P) So
viet Russian troops, attacking
in force after a 10-day barrage
which raked forests on the Tai
pale river, today were hurled
back by Finnish troops after a
furious battle, the Finnish army
reported tonight.
The Finnish communique de
clared Russia lost "hundreds"
of men and 14 of 50 Russian
tanks were destroyed. The Finns
also said four Russian tanks
"drove up to our positions and
surrendered."
The attack was aimed at out
posts of the Mannerheim line
on the Karelian isthmus, which
Russia has failed to penetrate
since the war began 17 days
ago.
A few battalions of hardy,
khaki-clad Finns near Lake La
doga, who have endured artil
lery shells from two sides day
and night for more than a
week, still were holding the
north liank of the Taipale river.
Around them, trees have been
splintered and the earth torn
by the steady pounding of
Soviet shells.
Farther down the river, to
ward Lake Suvanto, where the
Finns voluntarily withdrew a
week ago and permitted the
Russians to cross, the Soviet
command launched 50 tanks.
Only 32 returned to. the Rus
sian lines after the battle, the
Finns said.

Funeral services for Chester
L. Myers of 406 King street
who passed away Friday morn
ing, an account of which ap
peared in this paper Friday,
will be held at the Conger
chapel at 10:30 a. m. Monday
with Rev. C. W. Frost of the
Apostolic Faith officiating. Final
rites and interment will take
place in the Medford I. O. O. F
cemetery.

parents of Chester, arrived here
from Portland Saturday.

Funeral services for Russell
E. Utz will be held In the Perl
chapel at 2 p. m. Monday, the
Rev. James M. Hamilton, pastor
of the First Christian church of
ficiating. Mr. Utz, a sawyer, was killed
last week when he was caught
in a saw at a Portland lumber
mill. His body was to be
brought here this morning by
train. Interment will take place
in the Phoenix cemetery.
Mr. Utz is survived by his
wife. Tottie Ella, three step
children, Mrs. Addison White,
Mrs. Roberta Harpe and Mrs.
Donald Estep, and eight
brothers and sisters.

UP) President Roosevelt picked
Christmas trees today for mem
bers of his family.
Riding over his Dutchess
county estate, he looked over
the Christmas tree crop and
designated 100 for cutting.
Among them were a half dozen
which he said should be sent to
his sons and daughters and to
the White House.
Mr. Roosevelt previously had
shipped 400 trees to the New
York market.
