The First Christian church
will present a cantata, Christ
Child, by Hawley, Sunday eve
ning at 7:30 o'clock in the
ehurch.
Twenty-two voices compose
the choir and several other art
ists will be presented among
whom will be Miss Dorothy
Gore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
E. E. Gore, who is expected
home soon from Pomona college
in California. Miss Gore will
appear on the program as guest
violin soloist. She has been
lauded on the Pomona campus
recently for her excellent violin
ability.
Effie Kurtz is director and
Mable Sims the pianist. Also a
feature of the evening will be
Marmie Olson, soloist supported
by an Echo quartet of Junior
high school students.

Mrs. E. M. Wilson was hostess
at her home on South Riverside
avenue to the ladies' auxiliary
of the First Baptist church this
week.
Mrs. W. D. Roberts presided
at the brief business session.
A report was given on the
White Cross box sent to the
Philippines. The group voted
to help the missionary Christ
mas program planned by Mrs.
J. E. Lester.

To Visit Son
Mrs. M. C. Taylor of Oakland,
Cal., arrived in Medford this
week to visit her son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. L. C.
Taylor during the Christmas
holidays.
Davis' Sail for
South America
Interesting news from Mr.
and Mrs. Gilbert H. Davis was
received in Medford yesterday
by friends of the couple. The
Davis' left their home in Phoe
nix a short time ago for South
America where they will live
for several years.
The couple wrote that they
have been visiting friends and
relatives for several weeks In
Los Angeles. For the past four
days they have been docked in
San Pedro harbor taking on
more cargo before sailing on to
Balboa, Panama Canal zone,
which is their next stop. From
there they will take a Grace
line boat to Buenaventura, the
port of entry into Colombia,
South America, and from there
they plan to go by train inland
for several days to reach their
destination.
Tuesday by train from San
Francisco where the spent a
week.
She motored to the Bay Dis
trict with Mrs. George M. Rob
erts and Mr.i Robert C. Maentz.
McCaskey Guest
Is Party Honor ee
A popular visitor In the val
ley is Mrs. H. Van Hoevenberg
of San Francisco.
She is a former Medford resi
dent and the house guest until
Monday of Mrs. H. D. McCaskey
at her attractive home on the
Old Stage road.
Mrs. McCaskey was a recent
hostess honoring the visitor at
a dinner party. Guests were Mr.
and Mrs. Martin Luther, Mr.
and Mrs. Sprague Reigel and
Mr. and Mrs, C. S. Newhall.'
Mrs. Van Hoevenburg plans
to return to her Bay City home
Monday.

Christmas Party
The thirteenth club held its
annual Christmas dinner this
week at the home of Mrs. And
rew Larson on Spring street:
Mrs. Morris Johnsbhrg was
guest of - honor and received
many lovely gifts. The table
was appointed in banquet style
with flowers being pretty as a
centerpiece.
Twenty-five were present.
The evening was spent in play
ing cards and Chinese checkers.
Next meeting will be held Jan
uary 3 at the home of Mrs. S.
Sipes on the Midway road.

GRAYS HARBOR HIT

itP) Raked by a succession of
terrific gales, Grays Harbor had
almost four inches of rain In
36 hours, climaxed by a virtual
cloudburst at 8 o'clock this
morning.
Almost an inch of rain car
ried on a 70-mile gale roared
over the harbor in the brief
span of five minutes this morn
ing, worst downpour remember
ed by E. B. Crary, official
weather observer and a resident
here for 37 years. Streets ran
torrents within a minute or two
after the squall hit. An hour
later the storm had abated and
calm settled.
Despite the terrific storm and
rain, little damage was reported
here.
Infest Cattle Range.
Red Bluff, Cal. U.R Five
thousand head of deer which
"moved In" on the McKenzie
Stover winter cattle range,
when their own grazing grounds
were exhausted, are eating so
much that the 3,000 head of
cattle for which the range is
maintained are theatened with
starvation.

sell TJtz, sawyer, was caught
in a saw and killed yesterday
at a lumber mill. Utz, dragged
into the saw by his clothing,
was nearly cut in two.

Broiled Platter Dinner.
Dinner Menu,
t pound chopped beef round
i teaspoon salt
18 teaspoon paprika
1 egg yolk
3 tablespoons butter
6 onion sltees
Mix together the beef, salt, pap
rika and yolk. Shape Into five cakes,
each a half of an Inch thtck. Spread
with butter and top with one onion
slice per cake. Arrange In a shallow
pan. Broil for 10 minutes, three
Inches below a glowing flame. Baste
severs! times with the seasoning.
Seasoning.
4 tablespoons olive oil
teaspoon salt
J4 teaspoon paprika
14 teaspoon celery seed
Mix the Ingredients and use for
basting the broiled foods.
Broiled Vegetables.
cooked carrots
cooked potatoes
4 rooked beets
14 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon minced parsley
Place the vegetables In a shallow
dish or around the meat cakes.
Sprinkle with the rest of the in
gredients. Let broil for 10 minutes.
Baste with the seasoning and any
meat Juices which cook out of the
meat cakes.
Glased Pears.
4 hslves pears
' 18 cup brown sugar ' ' '
S tablespoons butter
14 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon Juice
Arrange the pears In a shaUow
dish and coyer with the rest of the
Ingredients. Let broil for 10 minutes.
