tuberculosis were urged today
by Miss Elsie Witchen. acting

a powerful factor in reducing
tuberculosis deaths in the last
32 years, but that war and in
ternational tension now threaten
this reduction.
"In periods of great strain,
such as the World war of 1914
18," Miss Witchen said, "all
countries recorded a definite in
crease of deaths from tubercu
losis. The anxiety, restlessness
and privation of these years
were causes of the higher death
toll."
HALF TURKEYS SHIPPED
Portland, Dec. 12. (IP) The
Portland turkey market, seeking
an outlet for large toms, made
a trial shipment of half-birds
wrapped in cellophane to the
eastern trade Monday.

Bishop John F. O'Hara said to
day he would relinquish the
presidency of Notre Dame uni
versity sometime next month to
assume active charge of the 417
Catholic chaplains with U. S.
armed forces. Bishop O'Hara
arrived here last week from
South Bend, Ind., for a vacation
He has been 'president of Notre
Dame since 1934.
In the Bessemer process, pure
iron ore is obtained by blowing

GIRLS TO PRESENT
SPORTS CARNIVAL
AT IDF
Girls' physical education
classes of Mcdford high school
will participate in their great
est exhibition of feminine sports
of the year Friday, when 200
students stage the school's third
annual sports carnival, sponsor
ed by the physical education
department.
The carnival, which will open
at 7:30 p. m., will be directed
by Miss Sue Moshberger, dean
of girls. She will be assisted
by Miss Betty Blaine, girls'
athletic instructor.
Evolution of dancing from
earliest history to modern times
will furnish the theme for this
year's show. The girls have
been practicing diligently for
the past few weeks and are
expected to give one of the best
demonstrations of girls' sports
seen thus far in the annual
carnival.
The program, open to the
public, will last approximately
one hour and there will be no
admission charge.

President and Mrs. Roosevelt
will celebrate Christmas this
year with a four-generation fam
ily reunion that will bring at
least four grandchildren. .
Mrs. Roosevelt told her press
conference today that the White
House Christmas schedule would
include the usual opening of
stockings Christmas morning, a
big Christmas dinner and em
ployes' parties.
Guests expected are the presi
dent's mother, Mrs. Sara Delano
Roosevelt; his sister-in-law, Mrs.
J. R. Roosevelt; the eldest
Roosevelt daughter, Anna; her
husband, John Boettiger of Se-
attle, and her children, Eleanor
and Curtis Dall, and John
Roosevelt Boettiger; Franklin
D. Roosevelt, Jr., his wife, the
former Ethel DuPont, and their
baby, Franklin D. Roosevelt,
third; and the youngest Roose
velt son, John, with his wife.

Mrs. Roosevelt will go to
Hyde Park to meet Anna and

LUCKY NEGRO COUPLE
TO BUILD APARTMENT
FOR COLORED PEOPLE
Philadelphia, Dec. 12. (IP)
One hundred Negro families of
South Philadelphia s slum dis
trict are going to get a modern,
low - priced apartment house
home because a generous Negro
couple won a $150,000 sweep
stakes prize last April.
The prize award completely
changed the lives of Benjamin
and Pearl Mason and their two
children. After existing on a
$11.40 weekly check, they now
own their own home, an inex
pensive automobile and have
paid back the $2,133.00 they re
ceived in relief money.
Now they're going to share
what's left with other members
of their race. They'll replace a
dilapidated block of tenements
with a modern apartment de
velopment, where rents will be
as low as possible. Three-fourths
of the construction work will be
done by Negro workers to fur
ther their desire to aid their
race.

Angeles, probably January 3
or 4.
The major resolution passed
at the convention asked Gov
ernor Culbert L. Olson, in his
call for a special legislative ses
sion next month, to consider
such matters as secondary boy
cotts, "compulsory closed shop
and compulsory hiring halls."
