, New Star, Linda Darnell Billed With Tyrone Power in Craterian Comedy
MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1939.
'DAYTIME WIFE' IS
E
FOR LOVELY LINDA
Co-starring Tyrone Power and
lovely Linda Darnell, the new
"find" who gets top billing with
. her second screen appearance,
"Daytime Wife" opens a three
day run today at the Craterian
theater with all advance reports
crediting it with being one of
the gayest comedy-romances of
the year.
Fans will see Tyrone Power
in the type of light comedy in
which he excels. He's a per
fectly swell guy, married to a
peach of a wife, but in trouble
up to his neck because well,
after all, he has a secretary
who isn't hard on the eyes.
Linda Darnell, who made
such an instant hit in "Hotel
for Women," is the wife, a mod
ern wife broad-minded and
understanding up to a certain
point.
Featured also are Binnie
Barnes, Warren William, Wendy
Barrie and Joan Davis.
The story opens on the sec
ond anniversary of Tyrone and
Linda, but Tyrone's not there.
He's had to "work late at the
office." When the celebrating
party swarms downtown to drag
the "worker" from his tasks,
they find the office deserted,
, and then the fun begins. There's
a secretary in it, of course, but
Linda ' decides to find out what
secretaraies have that wives
haven't. So she gets a job and
a dilicious situation arises when
Linda's boss takes her to a din-
ner party to meet and "talk
business" with Tyrone and his
secretary.
As a special added attraction
on the same program, the Cra
terian will have the March of
Time, presenting "Soldiers With
Wings." Realistically present
ing the first complete and au
thentic motion picture story of
the U. S. Air Corps, now being
rapidly built up at a cost of
200 million dollars, this new
issue of the March of Time,
filmed with the cooperation of
the Air Corps officers and men,
shows how America s air-mind'
. ed youths are today being selec
tively recruited and trained as
-'.'Soldiere With Wings."-

Never in the history of a mo

'Pride of The Bluegrass" in
tertwines the lives and fortunes
of the horse and two kids por
trayed by Edith and Jimmy.
The story as far as the horse
is concerned, contains incidents
which are somewhat parallel to
the main events in the life of
Elmer Gantry.
The remarkable will and
courage of the real horse re
main, however, as the dominant
theme of the story of the fic
tional horse. In the screen story,
the heroic horse is also stricken
blind and, despite this handi
cap, he responds so well to the
training of a human boy he
loves and trusts that he cour
ageously Koes out on a race
track and, guided solely by in
stinct and the voice of his rider,
wins one of the world's great
est races, the Grand National
Steeplechase at Aintree, Eng
land.
"Flight At Midnight," star
ring Phil Regan, Roscoe Turner
(the great International Air
Races winner), Jean Parker and
Robert Armstrong, plays as the
second feature with Gantry's

London, Dec. 9. (IP) Four
more ships, two British and
two neutral, were added today
to the mounting toll of the sea
war in which the efforts of
Britain and Germany to cut
each other's life lines continued
with unabated ferocity.
The four were sunk by mines
or torpedoes. A partial offset
was the British capture of a
German ship.
The growing seriousness with
which Britain views the mari
time conflict was reflected in
the admiralty's call for ex
sailors and ex-marines up to 46
years old to volunteer for the
duration of the war.
The death toll on the seas
for the week, fourteenth of the
war, was estimated at 400, in
cluding the crews of four
German submarines which the
British were sure had been sent
down. At least 24 merchant
ships were sunk

Bobby Breen takes a singing
lesson from Maestro Alan Mow
bray in this scene from "Way
Down South," a happy-go-lucky
story of the old south during
its pre-Civil war days when
slaves and plantations were the
country's leading land marks.
The film comes to the New
Rialto theater for Tuesday and
Wednesday. Others in the cast
include Ralph Morgan, Clarence
Muse, Steffi Duna, Sally Blane
and the famous colored Hall
Johnson choir.
A highlight of beaut and
rhythm in "Way Down South"
is the presentation of the in
teresting sugar-cane celebration,
an exotic dance spectacle tra
ditionally offered on old-tima
plantations by the slaves at the
completion of the harvest. In
It Bobby sings several old spir
ituals and other plantation mel
odies. "Cafe Hostess," starring Pres
ton Foster, Ann Dvorak and
Wynne Gibson, will play as the
companion feature with "Way
Down South."
