Of Her Daughters Kidnaping

year old Oklahoman, today told
of brutal treatment of her
daughter during the past 10
years, during which Miner had
kept her a virtual prisoner, for
bidding hor to have friends, hid
ing her when chance of discov
ery appeared and finally desert
ing her when she applied to
Pieher, Okla., authorities for
help.
The missing daughter of the
Ashland couple appeared at
their home in September, ac
companied by her four children,
aged from vno to nine years.
She had apolied to a welfare
agency in Miami, Okla., and the
agency, through contact with of
ficials in Pieher, Phoenix, Ariz.,
and Jackson county, Oregon,
found the address of Mr. and
Mrs. Vestal here. Transportation
expenses also were provided by
the welfare agency.
The children, Elsie, Marvin,
Opal and Charles, In order of
their age, were born in Pieher,
but Miner spirited the girl
mother, then 15, to a nearby
town for their marriage.
Fled For Year
For the first year of their life
together, the couple led a' fugi
tive existence through the middle-west,
and Alice Vestal was
forced to hide beneath a bed
in Miner's car to avoid detec
tion. The man worked at "any
kind of a Job for any kind of
wages, the girl told her mother,
rather than be required to give
full particulars about himself.
When life in Pieher, with her
husband became unbearable, the
young woman applied to city
authorities for aid. They inform
ed her that they could do noth
ing unless her father swore out
a warrant. In som2 manner
Miner learned that police had
been contacted, so he fled, Icav
ing his wife and their children
with no means of support.
Meager Income Shared
When the young woman and
her children came here she was
taken into the home of her par'
ents as 71 California street
Although four of her young
brothers and sisters already
shared the meager income of
the middle-aged parents, Alice
Vestal-Miner's parents told her
that she was welcome to a share
of what they hod.
At the time of the girl's ab
duction in Phoenix 10 years ago
the Vestals had been "better
off" financially, but their money
had gone in the rambllngs about
the midwest and west which
they followed on tips that they
might find the missing daughter.
At one time a reward was of'
fered for the girl's return, Mrs.
Vestal said.
Mr. and Mrs. Vestal came to
Ashland from Colorado three
years ago.
Letter Was Tlpoff
Shortly after Mrs. Miner ar
rived here In September, she got
a letter from her husband. It

the name "John Long" in ad
dress. Instead of writing, the young
woman turned the letter over
to her lather, who In turn wrote
to an attorney friend, Lee Hols
worth, and to the sheriff's office
in Phoenix.
When first interviewed, Mrs.
Vestal was reluctant to give in
formation, for fear that Miner
would learn of the search and
escape custody. She quickly as
sented, however, when she
learned that the man was
already under arrest.
Miner's mother is believed by
Mrs. Vestal to live in northern
Oregon, in the vicinity of Salem
or Mapleton.
Miner Awaits Sentence
Sentence for Miner, a railroad-
worker, has been set. for Mon
day afternoon at Phoenix. Max
imum sentence of 10 years im
prisonment is possible. Miner's
confession solved one of the
state's oldest abduction cases.
