Helena, Mont. (U.R) When
Douglas L. Stemple, Greenough,
Mont., was snowbound In a
mountain cabin for three weeks,
he had a lot of time to think
about a near-accident he had
on a highway curve.
As a result, the nation's high
ways may be made safer by
means of a signal system to
warn motorists of approaching
cars on blind curves which he
invented during his enforced
idleness.
The device, which works
much like a railroad block sig
nal. Is receiving experimental
tests by the Montana highway
department on McDonald Pass,
west of here.
D. A. McKlnnon, Montana
state highway engineer, has de
scribed Stemple's invention as
'an important contribution to
hlRhway safety. .
The signal system works like
this:
A thin rubber hose is placed
across the highway well back
from the blind curve. When
an automobile passes over it,
a red warning signal flashes at
the other end of the curve,
warning other motorists that
another machine is approaching.
It is estimated the devices
would cost about $100 each.
Hlghwey officials said they also
could be used on hills.

so excellent that he has had
seven proposals of marriage
from widows who read about
his job of home-making for five

When he sheds his coat In the

GHOSIS TO TAKE
Clemenceau, Ariz. (U.R) Thii
city's last hope for rebirth as
an important center of the na
tions' copper industry has van
ished and the community ap
pears destined to Join the ranks
of Arizona's "ghost" cities.
The decision that seemingly
spelled ultimate abandonment
of this 20-year old mining boom
community was told in a few
brief words that the $3,000,
000 copper smelter would be
dismantled, its parts sold as
scrap iron.
Clemenceau sprang into, exist
ence when the price of copper
shot upward in 1917. Around
the tall smelter chimney, a mod
erately thriving community
grew up, complete with homes,
business, schools and recrea
tional areas.
