SUPPORTING CAST
'A
'The Private Lives of Eliza
beth and Essex." the new tech
nicolor production starring Bette
Davis and Errol Flynn, has its
first local showing today at the
Craterian theater where It
opens a three-day run. A bril
liant, spectacular prod uction
with a magnificent cast of
thousands, the film play has
the two stars in roles into
which they fit like the well-
known proverbial glove.
." Bette Davis, of course, it cast
. as the self-willed, vain and dom
ineering Queen Elizabeth, torn
between her love of England
and its people and her over
whelming love - for the hand
some and dashing young Earl
of Essex. Flynn as Essex has
. precisely the type of role in
which he has endeared himself
to audiences the world over
that of a handsome, swashbuck
ling hero, as victorious in love
v u he is in war. But his vic
tory over Elizabeth is short-
' lived in the film; for, loving
him, she sends him to the exe
cutioners block, because she
realizes that if England is to
live, Essex must die. Played
against the spectacular back
ground of the pomp and pag
eantry of the Elizabethan court,
the love story is still the all
important theme on which the
film is focused.
The brilliant supporting cast
lor tne two stars includes Olivia
de Haviland, Donald Crisp, Vin
cent Price, Henry Stephenson,
Alan Hale, Raich Forbes. Henrv
Daniell, James Stephenson. Nan
ette iabares, Robert Warwick
and Leo G. Carroll.

Frank Capra's "Mr. Smith
goes to Washington reaches
Medford Wednesday when it
will open a four-day run at the
Craterian theater. And with
that announcement is the guar
antee of exceptional film enter
tainment, just as has been the
case with every Capra picture
of the last six years.
This time, the ace director of
Hollywood has turned his ge
nius toward the nation's capitol
and uncovered a typically Cap
ra. human story of a young
senator's trials and tribulations
and adventures that - happen
during his brief but exciting
career in office.
James Stewart and Jean Ar
thur top the cast, with Stewart
as "Mr. Smith" and Miss Ar
thur as a senator's sccretaiy.
A homespun youth, Mr. Smith,
seen at left below, is appoint
ed to the senate by Governor
Guy Kibbee, member of a gi
gantic political machine. Stew
art's actions in Washington, top
left, frighten party machine men
Eugene Pallette, Claude Rains
and Edward Arnold. Below
that is further evidence of the
trouble created by Mr. Smith
and his homespun principles.
'Beware Spooks" on
Rialto Screen Will
Feature Joe Brown
A hand-to-hand battle in the
intricate confines of a beach re
sort Spook House, with its slid
ing panels, eccentric lighting.
skeleton-lined closets and thous
ands of other laugh haunted
thrills, is the climatic sequence
of what has been hailed where-
ever it has played as the fun
niest Joe E. Brown comedy in
years. It is "Beware Spooks",
which heads a laugh-jammed
double bill opening for today
and tomorrow only at the New
Rialto Theatre. The film pre
sents the cave-mouthed star as
an officer of the law whose
eagerness to match his own
father's sturdy reputation is
counter-balanced somewhat by
the ease with which he gets into
trouble.
The fun starts when the star
allows a dangerous criminal to
escape from the police commis
sioner's office, where he had
been brought for questioning.
From that point on Brown gets
into more trouble than a paci
fist at a military school. He is
dropped from the force, evicted
from his apartment and finally
compelled to take his belated
honeymoon at Coney Island.
There his young bride aids him
in trailing the wanted criminal.
Joe follows the fugitive into a
beach fun house, and precipi
tates a battle that calls into use
every contrivance ordinarily
designed to mystify and terrify
customers.
An outstanding cast of Holly
wood screen favorites is seen in
support of the star. There is
Mary Carlisle who. portrays a
young bride bewildered by the
bizarre adventures which con
front her husband's career.
Marc Lawrence plays the crim
inal and the comedian Clarence
Kolb plays the bellowing police
commissioner.
The latest comedy adventure
from Nancy Drew, "Nancy Drew
and the Hidden Staircase," star
ring Bonita Granville, John Li-
tel and Frankie Thomas, plays
as the added fun feature with
"Beware Spooks". The new
film has the mischievious little
would-be detective in all
sorts of new laugh-provoking
troubles.

TO U.S. INDUSTRY
New York, Dec. 2. (fF) In
the first three months of the
war, the United States' indus
trial machine has spun out one
of the most rapid business re
vivals in many years.
The titanic struggle of eco
nomic prowess between the
Anglo-French front and Ger
many laps at the shores of Uncle
Sam's home market, the richest
business empire on earth.
Pittsburgh, Birmingham
Cleveland and other industrial
centers have sounded a boom
note under a combination of ex
pected war buying, normal
autumn stimulus and what some
business leaders call "natural
recovery" from a long depres
sion. ' .
Industrial production indices
are the highest in 10 years, after
an almost vertical rise from Au-
uauai
star of "Drums Along the Mo
hawk," goes hilarious for her
role opposite Don Ameche in
"Midnight," which plays today
and tomorrow only at the Roxy
theater. The film has Claudette
Lana Turner. America's glam
our girl, and Ann Rutherford,
Andy Hard's girl friend, have
two of the featured roles with
Artie Shaw and his swing band
in the jive and sing festival.
"Dancing Co-Ed," which comes
to the New Rialto theater for
a three-day run starting Tues
day. "Dancing Co-Ed" is a
parade of youth, plus romance,
comedy and glamour, with Artie
Shaw leading the world's most
popular band. Never before
has the youthful king of jitter
bugs appeared in a motion pic
ture but never before has a
musical show become as eager
ly looked forward to as "Danc-

the struggle enters the fourth

of the war from the long view

lng Co-Ed." Artie helps Lana
Turner tap her way deeper
into the hearts of her missions
of picture fans and into a ro
mance with the increasingly
popular Richard Carlson, who
has the romantic lead opposite
Miss Turner. Others In the
cast include Lee Bowman,
Thurston Hall, Roscie Karns
and Leon Errol.
"Missing Evidence," starring
Preston Foster and Irene Her
vey, will play as the added
feature with "Dancing Co-Ed."
