Thursday Club
Guest Speaker
At the recent session of the
Thursday morning study club
held at the Girls' Community
clubhouse, the program was de
voted to poetry. President Mrs
Leland Mentzer presided.
Mrs. Frank Gray gave an
interesting review of the biog
graphy of Edwin Arlington Rob
inson as recorded by Hermann
Hagedorn. Robinson, who was
the forerunner of the modern
school of American poets, has
been acclaimed by both Ameri
can and English critics as one
of the truly great poets. Mrs.
Gray said. He was awarded
the Pulitzer prize in 1921, the
speaker stated.
Miss Grace Chamberlain of
Ashland was a guest of the club
during the session. She spoke
on "South American Poetry," a
topic which she discussed com
prehensively. "South America," she said,
"has not only poets who write
sentimental verse and poets who
write poems of sentiment, but
the country has in its present
day poetry a style that is thor
oughly modern."
The speaker pointed out that
many successful reformers in
South America today employ
verse to promote their ideas and
ideals. Among those she men
tioned the Chilean authoress of
"Little Feet."
In South America, as else
where, Miss Chamberlain said,
we find propaganda promoted
through poetry, and, at the
present time, tbe spirit of Pan
Americanism pervades the verse
of South America.
Contributing greatly to the
enjoyment of her listeners was
Miss Chamberlain's reading of
many poems illustrative of the
various types and schools of
South American poetry.
