in potential expenditures by
tourists last summer because o
the bottle-neck formed by the
crooked highway over Mount
Sexton from Grants Pass to
Roseburg, Larry McDowell de
clared today.
McDowell, public relations
director for the Oregon Pacific
Highway association, said the
turn-back at Grants Pass in
creased from 41 per cent in 1034
to 58.88 per cent in 1939, based
on traffic counts at Grants Pass
"This bottle-neck has become
almost as unpopular as the Ore
gon Caves and Crater lake are
popular," McDowell said.
He added that for the first
time the Oregon coast highway.

Orated nutmeg
Wash oranges and stick with
cloves. Bring sugar and water to a
boil and add oranges, cover and
simmer until oranges are tender.
Remove oranges, strain liquid In
which they bave been simmered,
add to pineapple juice which has
been brought to a boll, but not
boiled. Stir In lemon juice. Serve
hot In small cups with a dash of
nutmeg. Cut oranges In small pieces
and add one or two to each cup.
Yield: 1 quart.

dition to an epidemic of colds
and influenza at Grants Pass
caused Roseburg school authori
ties today to cancel a football
game scheduled by the Roseburg
high school Indians at Grants
Pass Saturday.
Principal Olyde Beard re
ported this morning that he had
been informed one case of diph
theria had been reported at
Grants Pass and that 200 stu
dents were absent from school
because of colds and influenza.
British Cruiser Is

cover of a dense fog, the British
light cruiser Caradoc paid San
Diego a visit today.
Local navy authorities were
said to have been unaware of
the presence of the cruiser until
the fog lifted this morning, dis
closing the ship at anchor off
the quarantine station on Point
Loma.
The Caradoc came here to
take on fuel "with permission
of the navy department," it was
reported.

Alcatraz island prison on a writ
of habeas corpus.
