Probe Spy Ring
Maribor, Yugoslavia, Oct. 27.
(P) A former lieutenant col
onel in the Yugoslav army and
30 other persons were arrested
today for questioning in what
police described as a German
spy ring investigation. Besides
the ex-officer, name not given,
a textile engineer and a woman
were accused of being the chief
nazi spy agents.

McConnochie, a Scot, gave the
German captors the slip when
they stopped at Tromsoe, Nor
way, to unload survivors of the
British ship Stonegate, sunk by

ors, he managed to get ashore
undetected and came to Bergen
with them.
His story to the Bergen news
paper Aftenbladet after his ar
rival here said the City of Flint
sighted a foreign warship Octo
ber 9 which at first was assumed
to be British or French, but
proved to be the German pocket
battleship Deutschland.
The raider halted the freighter,
placed the survivors of the tor
pedoed British ship aboard and
then proceeded to check the
cargo, finding "a consicteraDie
quantity of oil."
Declaring this was serious, the
German commander said he
would not sink the ship, McCon
nochie related, but placed 18
Germans on board to take posses
sion.
The Scottish radio operator
said the City of Flint thereupon
began a slow, "unpleasant" trip
northward through "terribly
cold" seas.
Explosives Placed
Enroute, he continued, the
German crewmen planted
heavy charge of explosives in
the engineroom, prepared to
blow up the ship if they encoun
tered trouble. Later they en
tered an area of floating ice, and
the Germans painted out the
freighter's name, substituting
"Alf" for "City of Flint" and
painting the Danish flag on the
side. i
McConnochie said it was un-
' true there was anything wrong
! either with the engines or navi
i gation facilities of the City of
Flint.

pointed out that Americans
have watched the shifting and
regrouping of European popu
lations "with somethinc skin to
horror."
"But what of the great shift
ing of population in this coun
try?" he asked. "A shift from
steady Jobs to makeshift exist

"Has not the ruthless force
of economic displacement left
almost as many people home
less and hungry as has the ruth
less force of Hitler and Stalin?
Assailing "experimental ex
pedients such as pump prim
ing," Landon declared national
safety and individual security
"rest upon engagement of the

vate enterprises of their own."
CURRY COUNTY WOMAN
GUILTY STEALING STOCK

Mrs. Myrtle A. Garner, Curry
county ranch owner, was con
victed of larceny of livestock
yesterday by a circuit court Jury
that deliberated 15 minutes.
She was arrested with seven
men, five of them from Port
land, July 22 and charged with
taking cattle from Ellis Dement's
ranch.
Her attorneys announced they
would appeal to the supreme
court.
DOLURHIDE RANCH
BOUGHT BY HIES

nounced the purchase of the
pioneer Dollarhide ranch in the
Siskiyous from L. D. Dollarhide.
The 480-acre place consists of
rangeland, pasture and genernl
crop areas. It has house, barn
and outbuildings.
The Dollarhide ranch is one
of the oldest farms in the Sis
kiyou area and was the site of
the old "Dollarhide toll road."
L. D. Dollarhide received It
from his father, and Verne Dol
larhide and others of the fam
ily were born at the old home
site. The recent sale marks the
end of a family ownership of
over 75 years.
